Here Trinity, this is the fast one.  sorry the old 125 prints have faded a bit.  Course the guy by the car was a lot younger then also. ::)

Close up of the hood, it took most of a day to paint that.

Those metalflake jobs were tough to do right, Del. Plus, we were all a lot thinner back then........Buck(Who was about 127 soakin' wet back then) 8) ::) ;)
I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

Heres what it looked like before the paint job and after the icy day out on the Highway.  Slid it sideways into the front end of a 1969 Firebird that was pointed the wrong way on the highway.  I ALMOST got it off the highway and onto the shoulder which was flat and open. ;D

Sadly mistaken!  1971!  No heathen rounded winder bug in this fambly!  I never follow the fancy names for colors.  It's yaller to me.  ;D ;D ;D

My father and I were talking about my purchasing his VW Thing several years ago when I said I couldn't afford his price.  The next week he told me that he sold the convertible.  :o :o >:( >:( :( :'(

When I asked him why he said "You told me you couldn't afford it".  I told him "that was when we were talking about the Thing, not the beetle"!  He picked it out right from the factory in Osnabrueck and it was shipped over here.  It was destined to be a family story, but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.  He had to have fast cash!  .....oh, and he still has the Thing.  >:(

What?  There was no "talking him into" about it.  One of the duties as his child was "beer fetcher".  In the picture I was on my way to get his bucket to take to the pub! ;D ;D ;D

The 72-73  used the same glass as the standard bug.  The bigger one came in 74.  Interesting though, the hood of the non-import 71 looks like the hood on a 73 Super.  I've seen a few of the German Models and there are some differances.  The 71 was the last torsion bars front suspension convertable made, the 72 on was the slightly longer Super with the McPherson Strut front end

Course till 73 one could bring a German Model car in.

I hate that pale pastel yaller, for me it is the hardest color to paint.  I had a tendancy to run it.

The 73 model Super Beetle, which began in August (I think) 1972, was the first year with rounded windows.  I don't think the standard and super beetle convertibles were offered side by side in 1971, but I know the one pictured was a '71 was the first year for the super.  The standard beetles (non-convertible) were still offered for a few years afterwards.

Many of the changes were made due to American safety regulations.  It was not uncommon for changes to be implemented on the Export models before the domestic models got them.

My first beetle was a '72 super and it shook like crazy when I drove over 55mph but calmed down around 65 or 70.  I was a student and couldn't afford the repairs, so I sold it a few years later and bought a '70 standard.  It was like riding on a cloud.

I don't like the pale yellow either.   ;D

I have always loved the air-cooled VWs and wish I had one now!  :( :( :(

Now that I think about it, there was one with a rounded glass that didn't have the shock bumpers, I made a pick-up out of one. ;D  Been a long time.  BTW the 65 on up do not really have a flat glass it slightly curved, the pre-65's had a flat one.  Thats the one;s with the thicker posts.  Can pretty well tell all years when I can see the whole care, or at least the American models.  If I can't tell at a glane I can remove the back seat and know for sure. ;D
