The answer is as plain as rat turds in a sugar bowl, it's because there are more on one side than the other.  Nothing evil, don't require a big grant and a study, just so simple it confuses folks. ::)

I was gonna say that but I thought it was sarchasm.  Why are there more on one side than the other?  Don't give me that "just because" stuff either, nature is a little more percise than that.  Well that is until it comes ta humans, then everythings out the winder.

Didn't mean to put ya in a quandary!!!  It was just an old joke I used to hear back in Wisconsin.  :o

Del, I'm sure there are a lot of people that live near our parks around here that would be more than willing to sneak out at night and supply you with all the geese for roasting!  ::) :D

Actualy it's not other than in the obvious sense, there is a reason.  That is a joke that was created when the bird scientists were lackin an answer.  They figgured out a little more since then.

And most likely wasted a lot of our money tryin' to figger it out.  Now I've lost my humor amd feel ill, and it's all yer fault for analysing a joke.  Dang why do folks try to do that, it is so wrong.  Leo, next time laugh at the joke and go on, because of you we've highjacked 40's thread,,,,,,,,again. ;D

You use that $20 word on my friend and he'll shoot you in the foot with that Ruger 10-22 he's issued for work.  He knows them but don't need to use them to impress people or highjack 40's thread. ::)  I bet Forty Rod don't want you to be usin' such big fancy woods in his thread.   ::)

Boo hoo!!!  All the bad mans are stealing my thread.

Oh, wait!  That happens all the time.

How about an answer as to why the V is horizontal instead of veritical, huh?

(That oughta keep somebody awake for a night or two, too.  Tootootoot tutu, tootles.)

Atchaly, it is both horizontal and vertical.  You don't notice from the ground but each bird is higher than the one in front of it.

I'd tell you, 40 the answer ta the first question but ma feelins are still hurt from Del's obtuse comments.  (Ok, I paid full price fer that one).

Naw, he's off on a golfing binge talking about the woods.  I gave that game up in 1966 about the time I stopped skiing.  Used to have wood skis, too, back before modern synthetic materials and just before Marker "long thongs" and bear trap bindings vanished in a storm of litigation.

Truth be told, geese don't care whether their vees are even.  Their only care is smoothness/ease of flight.  I have seen "vees" that were far more like check-marks -- one side composed of only one to three birds, and all the rest on the other side.  I wouldn't be surprised, even, to see geese flying in echelon.

Still, what Forty-Rod experienced was, to my way of thinking, a moment filled with grace.  All are to be cherished.

Yer right Dan, that was his intent.  It's ust a little game we play whenever he starts a topic.  We take it seriously for a page or so then comes Bedlam.  It's a terdition.  I imagine it was a grand moment for him.

I just didn't want the beauty of that moment to get lost.
