One of those sits in the Charlie Russell Museum in Great Falls Montana.  But it's in a coach gun configuration with about an 18 inch barrel AND interchangable choke tubes.  That has to beone of the more unique designs I've ever seen.  Please tell me you own that.

Forty Rod

The Roper had adjustable choke tube, sort of like the PolyChoke, as standard equipment.  'Cartridges' were reloadable steel tubes loaded like a modern all brass shotgun shell and originally (I think) fitted with percussion caps, later with rifle primers.

Just took a better look of the wide view of that unit.  It does have an interchangeable choke tubes.  Nothing is ever new is it?  See if you can talk him out of it by telling him that ratty old thing is just a boat anchor.  Offer a nice new shiny Remington 870 or something wold serve him much better.  An old friend of mine has a couple of original Sharps Carbines converted to .50-70, and I'm always doing the same to him.
