If any of you say the newest episode of Lock and Load on the History channel with the Gunny, did you happen to notice how he loaded his Henry?    I was cringing the entire time.













Yes, he loaded it in a vertical position and let the rounds drop to the bottom of the tube.   Some "expert" was standing next to the Gunny shoooting a Spencer, but apparently didnt notice how the Gunny was loading the rounds.

Not only that - did you see how the "Spencer expert" shot is Spencer?  Who would speed shoot a Spencer like that!

Yes I noticed both things.  I to was cringing while he loaded the Henry.
These so called "experts" amaze me.  The other day on the History Channel they had an expert comparing a flintlock with a breech loader.  He primed the pan by heaping the powder to the top of the pan and of course he had a delayed ignition.  Any experienced flint shooter knows that you only put enough priming powder to come to the bottom of the flash hole so that the powder flashes through the hole and not have to burn down to it

I was waiting for the mag tube to explode at any instant while watching.  Might have been "Must See TV" if that had happened.  At least Gunny didn't allow the mag follower to spring down on the loaded magazine.

I missed that episode....I also missed an opportunity to be an "expert" for one of the programs....unfortunately, I was invited by a contractor who works for my "employer"...and this was not considered "kosher" by legal  . I've seen at least one person I know on the program who worked for  my "company" at the time..he's pretty high up so I guess that makes it ok.

Maybe when I retire.....

First I want to say I love the Gunny.

That said , I was sure disapointed when I watched the last episode on the progression of rifles. 
Thier was no mention of the breechloaders before self contained ammo like the  54 sharps and first rolling blocks and the smith.  He did mention revolving rifles but didn't know how to hold one with your left arm behind the cylinder. 
They also skipped the early single shot breechloaders like the trap door the and the transision of the sharps to metalic cartridges.  Then he said the 1903 springfield was the first US military rifle to use smokeless powder.  I guess no one told him about the .30-40 krag.  I sort of lost intgerest once they got to the 20th centery. 
It makes you wonder just what the requierments for "expert" are?

I watched it and also considered it in very poor form.  I was surprised when he started loading it and wondered if he just did not know the risks he took.

I went to be when he skipped the M-14 and went to the M-16.  At that point it was bed time.

Hey Joe,
  I will tell you, you don't want to know what mistakes are made and what you are missing.   The biblical battles show nearly made me stop watching the history channel.  My historical expertise falls into the bronze age up to migration period of post roman europe.   While a chemist, I have the equivalent of a bachelors degree in history.  The mistakes made when ever they do bronze age are just painful to watch.  I just hope it garners enough interest to get people to research it on their own.

I watched Greg Martin, of Greg Martin Auctions drop in the rounds in the Henry he was holding, then he let the follower slam down.
   


And we wonder why lawyers LOVE guns and average shooters!
