I have a size 8 mellon, too.  Where do you buy a hat?

(I have a secret source I'll share for a nickel.)

Didja ever wonder why they don't make more hats in men's sizes?   :D

It's almost impossible to find any bigger than 7 3/4.

I have a big Cherokee Indian friend, that has never found a hat of any style that fit him, I never realized hat company's only went so large, my friend had a head of hair like you would find on a Timber Wolf, but even when he got a crew cut, nothing would fit. ???

Depends on the hat.  For CAS hats I've had good luck with a couple of vendors who make all of their hats custom.

Miller Hats http://www.millerhats.com/oldwest_index/oldwestindex.html made the black hat you normally see me wearing.

Tonto Rim makes a good hat. http://tontorim.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/page1.html  They made the one I'm wearing in this pic:

For Akubra hats (and yes, I have one), try David Morgan. http://www.davidmorgan.com/akubra.html?cPath=2_22&ad_code=GO_akubra2&kw=akubra%20hats&gclid=COy3uKrpvqACFRtabQod2DlmUg

For baseball caps and such, its hard to beat Bighead Caps.  http://www.bigheadcaps.com/index.html

And once every blue moon or so, you just stumble on a great deal.  I bought two (count 'em, two) older, high-quality Cattleman's Crease cowboy hats from a fellow on the SASS Wire a few years back.  Got 'em cheap, too, because both are size 8, Long Oval.  I actually had to put a leather strip inside the sweatbands so they wouldn't slide down over my eyes!!!  One I reshaped into a Duke-style hat:

The other one, another black hat, is still awaiting my decision.

Yup, that was the story of my life up until I found Miller Hat Company and Bighead Caps.  Tell your Cherokee friend "Sheeyo!" for me, and let him know about these two companies.

This was taken at the Western 3 Gun World shoot in Piru California in August 2009. Daniel's on the left, me in the middle, and one of WC's students on the right. His name escapes me, but he spoke very highly of WC as a teacher and friend, and the guy was a heck of a good shooter.

And I thought I was a "Fat Head" for wearing a 7 5/8! Some would say I'm a fat head regardless of hat size :P

That would be Excalibur, to whom I jokingly refer (in his presence) as "The Former Caliber."  I've even got other folks doing it.  Yep, he's a great shooter, and will be even greater.  Likewise, I often refer to Latigo Bang (who I think you met) as "Oughta Go Bang."  Every time I do that, he gives me a big ol' possum-sized grin!

The range in the background, by the way, is the Hole In The Wall Gang.  Its way cool to have two CAS ranges that close together.

JD Alan

Thanks for that reminder Daniel. I did shoot with Latigo, and almost shot his dog a couple of times! I liked him and Excalibur; they were both on the posse I was on. In fact everyone on our posse was great, and we had a real good time.

I've got a couple of weddings schudeled for the middle of August this year, so I don't know if I'm going to be able to get down there or not this year, but I sure would like to.

I've looked but have been unable to find a date for the 2010 W3G world cup. Anyone know for sure?

Looks like a motley crew and do ya ever notice how those cameras make us look bigger than we really are? ::)

Thanks JD

I drove out there a couple weeks ago after fishing up at Lake Piru. The road to get over the creek to he range has washed out. You can still walk but no cars can get over. A couple of trailers are stuck on the other side.

That happens every other year or so.  10 months out of the year that creek is dusty-dry, so its easy to forget just how much water comes rushing down it during heavy rains.

On the road in, well before the first range, do you remember the big culvert you crossed?  That sucker got washed completely away several years ago.  It was only in the last year or so that it was replaced.

JD Alan

WC, did you catch anything?
