Very cool, and maybe I can tag a sharpening question in on this thread. ::)

A friend has a couple of 8" wheels that fit on a standard grinder, if you take the guards off, that are made out of paper I guess. You can find this contraption at www.paperwheel.com. He bought a grinder at Harbor Freight and turned it around so the wheel would come up at you.

He puts some sort of grit on one wheel and rouge on the other.

Any thoughts on this type of thing? Could it be used on a round knife? How about a swivel knife blade? Just curious.

I have one of those sharpening systems. They work great for head & round knives.

Ned, this address should you get to at least one site. There are quite a few out there. I'm reading all sorts of conflicting "Guidelines" for using the wheel, including which direction it should turn, where a person should stand, etc. etc.

I don't know anything about the wheel with the grit, and only a little bit about the paper and rouge wheel.

I do appreciate the safety tips!

I've never seen a worm drive grinder, either. The one that was my dad's had the crank inline with the wheel. That one is very cool.

Regarding this paper wheel on the grinder, I may not have made myself clear (happens a lot). The wheels turn up and away, like they tell you to do. The blade is sharpened pretty close to the top of the wheel, say 11 or so. Then they say to stand to the side when using it, and they show pictures. I realize just because someone says to do it doesn't mean it's necessarily safe.

So, Outrider and WC, if you don't mind, could you tell me how you use this product, such as set up,and whatever else you think someone who uses this would need to know.

I really appreciate the profession manner in which both of you handle yourselves. Thanks, JD

Thanks for that Link WC. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but that wheel spun up and away, not down. That's exactly what I've seen done.

You are correct. You can see by the name on the grinder it is turned around backwards.

I sorta toyed with the alias "Big Injun Nighteyes" and "Big Injun Dan", but decided against 'em.  I really am 6 feet tall, with big barrel chest and (thanks to my German genes) a size 8 coconut. In fact, if'n I ever had to haul *ss, I'd have to make two trips...
