Cactus Rope, This native Texican don't like snow at all, period. I was born in the Texas Panhandle and lived there and the Oklahoma Panhandle until 1972. I saw enough snow to last me a lifetime. We had a blizzard up there in 1957 and we had 8 ft drifts of snow around our house. I moved to the D/FW area and we've only had snow of a measurable amount about 2 or 3 time since 72.

TL
Yeppers I remember one of those 2 or 3 times. If memory serves me I believe it was 1980 or 1981, New Year's eve. Just moved from Omaha, Nebraska to Plano. Ice storm with 11 inches of snow. Stayed home and watched it on TV, what a hoot. I sure wasn't going to get out there with those CRAZY folks. ;D ;D

Cactus Rope, I have spent almost 40 years as a Cop and have worked numerous accidents around the Metrroplex. These folks around here are non-drivers when the weather is bad. I'm not going to miss having to do that this winter.

I was visiting my mom near Tucumcari NM Thanksgiving 1996, and a snow/ice storm hit the west half of the Panhandle that Friday.  I left for Oklahoma CIty Sunday morning - I40 was clear all the way to Glen Rio (Tex/NM border) then SOLID ICE all the way to Amarillo.  Took me almost 6 hours to go 100 miles.  Lotta wrecks on the side - mostly 4WD (on ice, that just means you have 4 wheels spinning, not just 2)  Seems Texas didn't have any snowplows (?) - they were actually bringing them down from Nebraska.  Freeway was clear east of Amarillo, and I made it back to OKC before sundown.

They have snowplows in Amarillo to keep that stretch of I40 open in and out of New Mexico and east to Oklahoma. I don't miss that stuff. They had a blizzard come through there this spring and over 3,000 head of cattle froze to death.  I would rather have the hot weather than the snow anytime.

TL,   Was through Laredo just after New Years a couple years ago and there was still 5" of snow on the ground and confused people everywhere. If you want to see "non drivers" you should have been there.

Niederlander

I'm always amazed when we get snow or ice.  I work an eight county area north off I-80 and we might get one or no wrecks in that whole area.  Meanwhile the guys on the Big Road spend a ten hour shift going from one wreck to another.  Most all of them are due to "driving too fast for conditions".
"There go those Nebraskans, and all hell couldn't stop them!"

Dalton Masterson

What amazes me Ned, is your area is also full of curves, hills, and dropoffs, that you should be getting some accidents, but the Big Road is flat, wide, and full of nuts.
When its icy or bad conditions, I am usually working, pushing snow, etc, but if I am traveling, its time to get off of the Nut Highway.
Imagine if a giant squirrel starting dropping half of those nuts up there in your area!

There's a reason I picked a duty station as far off the Big Road as I could and still be in Troop C!

Boys, I won't see you folks in Neb. till the first weekend in June for Rock Creek Station. You keep that snow up there, I don't want any down here.  Ned, I didn't know that you were a pistol toter. I'm sorry I missed you at the Muster this year.

This Native Texican LOVES the snow since we do not get it very often.  I was ecstatic that we got to shoot the Grand Muster in the snow!

Christmas 2004 in Cotulla, TX which is about an hour north of Laredo.  My Mom-in-law said it was the first time it snowed at the ranch in 40 years.  The deer, Axis, turkeys, javelina & hogs didn't know what to think with all that cold, wet white stuff everywhere!

Drydock, I grew in the Texas Panhandle and I lived there and the Oklahoma Panhandle. It can snow up there anytime after Labor Day. We hardly ever get snow in the MetroPlex, we only get Ice. No one can drive on Ice. Usually, by the end of October, the temp. has cooled down. I know that there is a Best Western there in Lockhart and a couple of good places to eat BBQ.

Don't forget the privately run State Prison.  I could give you a guided tour of the jails and prisons all over the State of Texas.

The Best Western is where I stayed when we shot the TSRA match there.  BW is my preferred place to stay when I travel.

Scout, I guess that's where I'll plan on staying then. I've seen the signs for the BW there in Lockhart, but we never spent the night doen there. I've been to Lockhart many times to pickup prisoners at the county jail and the prison unit.

For those who were at the muster when I had to leave early, heres the update on my parents.

They are doing much better.  Both home now.  Both still have to use walkers to get around though.
Dad is recovering really well and getting around great, but still has to were a neck brace for awhile yet.  He gets dizzy spells but one of the Docs says that could be from all the different meds he is on.  He probably won't be driving anymore and that will be an adgustment.
Mom is doing well also but it's slower going.  the has a broken ankle and wrist as well.  This makes geting around and doing things harder.  She is also going through alot emotionaly and that will take longer to heal.

thanks for the good wishes.
