I like shooting my 97. It is 100 years old this year. I also like shooting black powder. Any opinions on shooting this gun with BP in cowboy matches. I'm shooting for fun. Any problems if I do it?

Problems, no...other than removal of the grin from your face.
No problems from my experience with a repro 97 and the lowly Marlin trombone gun (mine made in 1907). A "takedown" model such as my Marlin is easiest to maintain.

No problems from my takedown 97s. Lots of fun too, especially in the rare times you can stoke them up!

At least that's where I got the photo a couple of years ago. I also have a few of the shirts.

When the Model '97 was a new design there were very few shotgun shells loaded with anything but black. It was well into the 1920s before most handloaders of shotgun shells used anything but BP. So, why would using The Holy Black cause problems?

Pony Racer

One of the best sights and sounds in SASS... A 97 shooting BP out of brass shells.

The clang of them shells being ejected when matched with the mighty BP boom, smoke and fire is amazing!!!! ;D

Hmmm, gots a 97 gots the brass shotshells with a little 777, I'm going to
give it a try.  By the way I really like shooting my trusty Stevens single 94
with the above mentioned shells. Regaeds, JJ :)

Shot a match today and thoroughly enjoyed shooting BP in the 97. Glad I've got a couple hundred rounds. Now to find a MEC.

Blackpowder Burn

Yesterday was my "trombone day" (all pump long guns).  Shot my USFA Lightning and '97 with black for the first time.  It was lots of fun for a change of pace.

It was really fun to stoke up the '97 and let 'er rip!  4 shotgun rounds, each with 65 grains of black, as fast as you can pump it do indeed make a cloud!  Especially when it is a humid day with calm winds.  ;D
