Can anybody tell me if it's legal to use the model 1858 with a 5 1/2 inch barrel in NCOWS matches?

would any of you also know if there is a holster maker out there who makes a civil war model flap holster for a 5 1/2 inch 1858? is this holster historically accurate?

Check with David Carrico!  I have two military holsters from him and they are both top notch.  Both were special order, an 1871 model for a Colt Army Open Top [ pg. 23 of Packing Iron - no swivel] and the other an 1878 Model holster for an Artillery length SAA. [pg. 25 of Packing Iron].  David won't do you wrong!!

I'm a long time customer of EL Paso Saddlery.  They always have treated me right. They make a nice 1860 reproduction that can accomidate custum barrel lengths.

Usual wait time for a holster from them is 6 to 8 weeks.

I'll put in a plug for one of our own: Trailrider.  He's top notch and reasonable.

i am going to put my $0.02 on the 5 1/2 barrel.  I didn't like the way the full lenght barrel remmington felt when I shot a friends.  THen I shot his 1875 Outlaw in 5 1/2.  It was sweet.   Since I prefer cap and ball, I bought the 1858 in 5 1/2, with an extra cylinder.  That is a sweet combo.  Then I got a R&D conversion cylinder.  This is my only cartridge pistol and it is a real sweet natural pointer.

Of course we all know what your referring to by "1858"...but it would be more accurate to call this the New Model Remington percussion revolver or such (we are a more "historically" oriented crowd, BTW) . Do a little research and see if you agree.
