For pistol barrels, one that's very gentle for old firearms and how do ya go about not messin up an old finish.Got what looks like maybe an old thumbprint or body oil spot that was not cleaned right and sort of set little rough feeling rust area.

Steel wool ??? ??? Buffer ???

St. George

The finest steel wool that you can locate - and 'good' oil.

Let the oil sit awhile to penetrate the surface before you begin to s-l-o-w-l-y use the oiled steel wool.

Don't be surprised if the finish underneath the rust is discolored or freckled, but going slowly and carefully will minimize it a little.

You can also try 'Frontier Metal Cleaner' and oil - the pad looks like a big, silver 'Char-Boy' - but it works.

Don't ever take a mechanical device to it...

Good Luck!

As an added, when you go to the hardware store, the steel wool will be marked 0000 grade, don't settle for anything coarser.

BTW the same steel wool is also one of the best was to remove lead from a badly leaded barrel, something every one should have on hand.

I use the 0000 steel wool and Flitz to take the powder discoloration off the cylinder of my ss revolvers.

If it's an old gun of any value at all, cleaning it will drop the value more than nearly anything you could do. I've seen a WWII weapon drop to as little as 1/5 it's worth with a 'good cleaning'. Likewise I've seen a Wells Fargo & Company SAA loose nearly $1,500 in value because the owner 'fix'er up' to sell, that was in early 1980s dollars.

And keep in mind that bluing IS a form of rust. Do not use rust removers such as naval jelly or you will be looking at metal "in the white". Don't ask me how I know this.
