Have you been working a load up for your rifle . I have a couple boxes of the Powder Inc. ammo and will use it during season . I can't wait to try it out in the field . Hope we can get lots of pictures , so don't forget your camera . Happy Hunting .

I'll be using my flintlock mostly this year but if the weather is bad I'll have my 76. I'll be using a 350 grain bullet pushed with 58 grains of ffg. Maybe I will get lucky and take a deer with each. I do get lucky once in a while. ;D

Shotgun Franklin

I have a SS '92 clone in .45 Colt and a Marlin Cowboy in .38-55. I'll use one or both depending on the range and weather.
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.

I have a load set for my 45/60 from last year Rowdy, so I'm ready with that rifle. I'm going this weekend to sight in a couple of other guns, and my 45/75 will be one that I'll tweak on a little. I want to get it zero'd at 75 yards, as that is the most likely range I'll need it for in the woods. Most likely I'll stay with Triple Seven loads with 350 gr. bullets, as they seemed to hold good groups at that distance and shorter. I'll check some at 150 yards and see if they open up too much. I do have a few boxes loaded with 5744, but I prefer the smoke of the T7 loads.

I'm getting ancy myself here, as bow season opens this weekend. We'll be trying our luck next weekend and the following weekend with bow. Got two food plots planted and a small pond put in over summer, so hopefully that will hold some nice bucks in the area for us. We are in a herd control unit this year, so doe tags (and deer) hopefully will be plentiful, although they DO seem to dissapear during gun season. I've got a lot of guns to try out this year - two lever guns in 45/70 and 45/90, along with the trapdoor carbine, so I'll be hunting all 9 days of the regular season and 4 days of a doe only season in October. Probably rotate guns depending on where I'll hunt that day. I may get a couple of boxes of the P.I. ammo for the 45/60 after seeing how well your gun shot with it - just for back-up ammo. Best of luck to 'ya (and all other hunters) this year. I know Dick D. is an avid deer pursuer here in Wisconsin, along with a few others I don't recollect the names of at the moment....

Russian

I have been really wanting to use my 76, but being that I am a mountain hiking hunter, I don't know if I would enjoy lugging the thing around all weekend....it all goes back to another long hunt with a Garand years ago.  Let's just say I have a great appreciation for the boys who carried them through from D-Day to Germany!

I hear that Russian. I did lopp off 4" of my 45/60 and 3" of my 45/75 to cut down on weight, but even at that it's more of a 100 yards at a time walk through the woods type rifle for me. Goin' up and down mountains out west would not be enjoyable, at least at my age and conditioning....I have a nice old Model 600 Remington in 350 Rem Mag for that kind of work....

If your going to be on foot while hunting a sling would be a GREAT investment . I use a old sling that I had on a muzzle loader , just slip it on and take off walking . I like the muzzle stuffer sling because it doesn't ugly up the stock with sling swivels . Hope everyone has a safe and successful hunting season .

Sometimes I hunt with my grandpa's model 54 Winchester.  It doesn't have a sling and my hunting land is pretty steep and I need both hands so I took a bicycle inter tube, cut the section with the valve stem and then cut 2 holes, one on each end.  One big enough to slip over the but stock and the other I make like a lasso noose and slip it over the muzzle.  It works great and I can shoot with it on if I need to.  Mostly I take it off when I get to a stand.  I carry it muzzle down so the tube won't slip off as I walk.

Well I got a chance to tweak the 45/60 and 45/75 over the weekend. The 45/60 is still shooting 4" high with 300 grain bullets and a stuffed case of Pyrodex RS. The Triple 7 loads were maybe an inch lower. Groups were in the 4" range at 50 yards. I'm still going to get around to putting on a Marbles front sight on it, but at least I feel comfortable hgunting with it.

My 45/75 shot better. The 325 grain bullets over 22.0 Gr 5744 were very mild and dead center at 50 yards - tight 3" group. The Triple 7 loads hit the same spot, but left a larger slightly deeper depression in the 3/8" steel plate. Recoil was mild, actually less than the 45/60, but this rifle has a slightly longer barrel than the 45/60. All in all, a great hour and a half of shooting them - only downside is now I have to reload some cases!  ;D These '76's are really nice rifles.

Sounds like you are on the ball . Do you have the standard back sight  ( chappie sight ) on your rifle ? I wasn't a big fan of that sight I have a Smith sight that I got from Brownell's it works great . I hope to drop me a big ole Buck with my 76 this season . And I hope you and everyone Hunting with a 76 has a successful season . Good luck boys .

Dirty Brass

Both my 76's are Uberti's Rowdy. I'm still running the stock rear buckhorns on both. I've trained myself to use the same hold on both rifles, so I can live with them. The front sights are a bit narrow for my eyes, so Marbles are in the future there. Probably Ivory bead. We did a little bow hunting here last weekend. Didn't see or shoot anything yet, but the game camera's are keeping us pumped up. Lots of pics of feeding deer, but all after nightfall. Gotta be my favorite time of the year!!

Finally got to shoot my rifle , I had the smoke a rollin . I used the Powder Inc. ammo it did a great job . I was happy with rifle and ammo . They worked GREAT together . Now all I have to do is wait for opening day . I can't wait .

I managed to use my 45/75 during the T-Zone doe only hunt we had here 'bout 10 days ago Rowdy. Took a nice, but on the small size doe at 45 yards with it. Shot placement was a little high, but it made no difference to the deer. She went down where she stood. "Course I didn't know that for about 5 seconds, 'till the smoke dissipated.  ;D My load was a full case (slight compression) of Triple 7 under a 350 gr. SPG lubed bullet.

I'm guessing the 45/60 will work just as well, but for some reason I just like the 45/75 better. I did break tradition  :o  and put a True Glow front bead sight on the 45/60. It was shooting 4" high at 100 yards, so I had to replace it anyhow. These danged eyes just don't see that brass bead (45/75) to well at dusk. I'll be re-sighting that one in next weekend. Best of luck on your hunt when the time comes!

Don't think there is much bragging right to a 120 lb. doe, I don't care what you shoot it with.  ::)

Take a look at my avitar. That was 1987 I think - nice 350+ lb. cow elk with a Ruger SBH 10 1/2" 44 Mag. That was worthy of posting, but back then I had no computer. Heck - I don't even know if there were computers OR forums back in those days! (chuckle)

I'll post pics when I think they are worthy of posting - believe me.  ;D
