Has anyone tried reloading 45-75 with Jacketed bullets?  if so, what were your results?

Dirty Brass

I have run JSP in my 45/70 and 45/90 using smokeless loads, never with BP or subs., but these are in the stronger Browning and Marlin 1886 and 1895 model  guns. My 45/75 only see's LFP - I figure why wear the rifling or subject it to higher pressures - it works just fine with my T7 loads and a 350 Gr. SPG lubed bullet. I don't see any reason to even try it in the older 1876 actions.

For what it is worth, I use that 350 grain Hornady jktd fp over 3031 in my 45-75.  Although I have only loaded one box and tried it out at 100 yards, I can't say that it didn't perform bad.  In fact not bad at all but I think that, even though I still have that one box loaded, I think that I will probably stick to my lead loads.

Can anyone recommend good cast bullets for the 45-75 (Uberti)?  I have the lyman mould, but my cast bullets are seldom very good.  I purchased the mould in case I could not find them commercialy available.

Cav:
I had a custom mold made by Hoch over a year ago and I sent him a copy of the picture out of an old Lyman reloading manual that showed a sketch of an orginal Lyman mold for the 45-75.  The mold I got casts a perfect 350 grain lead flatnose using a 20:1 alloy.  His molds are not cheap and it takes several months to get but as far as I am concerned my mold does great.  It, by the way, is the second mold I have had him made.  The other one is for my 40-82 and it is good also.  Other than that, don't know what else to tell you.

This bullet works pretty well in the 45-75, and is very close to the original. :)  BA used to cast this one as a solid point, but for some reason went to the HP version.

They have added this bullet, which looks good - but I have not tried it!  Yet! ;D

The  purpose of a jacketed bullet is advantage. They can go faster and hold together better at these higher velocities. Having said that, I can't seem to see any advantage to using jacketed bullets in a cartridge/rifle of limited velocity. The maximum velocity of 45-75s and the like are well within the performance range of lead bullets. I don't even understand why the cartridge companies(ie: Rem. and Win.) load low velocity rounds like the 45-70 and 44-40, etc. with jacketed bullets except to wear out the barrels on antique rifles so they can sell us new ones.

I used some 300 gr. jacketed bullets in fireforming loads when I got started with the .45-75 (and was awaiting molds).  Worked fine, accurate enough.  There is no advantage to using them in this cartridge.  Indeed the better bullet is the correct 350 gr. cast number.  Still, if I had nothing else, I wouldn't worry about using them in MODERN REPRODUCTIONS.  I would NOT use jacketed bullets in original guns.

Hobie

Grizz,
I ordered these bullets from BACO about four weeks ago, and when the box came in, they're solid points.  Just FYI.

Thanks, hhughh.  I liked the solid point better, so glad to hear they went back to it. :)
