As long as the barrel is cut square, the only "crown" an 1851 is the slight bevel on the inside radius.  All you really need to do is clean up the burrs from cutting.  You can also use a 3/4 inch ball bearing and some 220 and 800 wet/dry paper.

3/4 inch ball bearing and some 220 and 800 wet/dry paper. how do you use this method to clean up the burrs

St. George

Don't use a screw - use a carriage bolt.

It has a smooth surface, and won't continue cutting/burring.

Simply chuck it into your drill, put the sandpaper in place, and s-l-o-w-l-y - very s-l-o-w-l-y, run the drill (or use your hand) and rotate until you've broken the sharp edge left by the cutting.

You can also use crocus cloth as a final polish.

All it takes is time, some small effort and a good eye.

I replaced an Uberti Colt 51 Navy front sight with an Uberti Remington sight, shortened and reshaped to hit POA.
The Remington sight requires a 74 degree dovetail cutter (from Brownells).  A triangular hand file won't work because they are the wrong angle.

If you need help, I can cut the dovetail and mount the sight for you, email me.

This is a Remington sight on a 51 Navy Colt.

My method with a 3/4 inch ball bearing is the same as described by St George.  Stick the sand paper against the bore, shove the ball bearing down on it, grip both tightly and rotate back and fourth by hand. It isn't quick, but it's effective.

PS:  I like the Carriage Bolt head idea too.

Professor Marvel

Greetings Fellow City Netizens -

Any of the prior recommendations by my learned colleagues will produce excellent results and a professional appearance. Monsieur Flint, I especially admire your 1851 front sight treatment!

However , since we are discussing BP revolvers shooting mainly RB and some short conicals, and at rather amusingly short distances, I am beginning to wonder about a technical "need" to crown the barrels on our chop-jobs. Has anyone shot a barrel for accuracy that was deliberately left merely "filed square and deburred" ?

as far as i know i ordered a sight from vti and it is the 1858 remington sight with notch http://www.vtigunparts.com/store/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=13&cat=Uberti+1858+New+Army. so i am going to have to file in a notch and slide it in.

ronster

gee i think i ordered the wrong site. the target site is the one u need to file a groove and slide in. the other i think u have to make a hole for.

Flint

ronster, there are two sights, one is the standard pinched post front sight, with a 74 degree dovetail, and the other is a two piece sight, a blade and a base.  I'm not sure how the blade is attached to the base, but they are made for the adjustable sighted target model, and probably won't work for your purpose.

You need the standard dovetailed pinched post front sight.  VTI part number UB:100015
