I'm an old gamer from way back when (D&D, but you didn't hear me say it, Boot Hill game, etc).

Gamers think of heroes in terms of measurable abilities, meaning some number assigned to a finite trait.  I'm going to make a list of Western (and movie or TV) heroes with traits and ratings as I think they would have been (similar to the old Boot Hill game if any of you recall that).  Feel free to alter or propose your own.

Rating System: 1 through 10, with 1 being pretty sorry, 10 being the best, and 5 to 6 being average.

Abilities will be:

Reflexes:  Drawing and firing speed
Marksmanship:  Accuracy with a firearm
Resolve:  gumption to stand up to or face down another equivalent legend
Hardiness:  ability to take lead and keep on standing

Okay, here it goes:

TV or Movies

Matt Dillion (from TV's "Gunsmoke")

Reflexes:  7
Marksmanship:  9 (does he ever really miss?)
Resolve:  9
Hardiness:  10 (this guy had more lives than Rasputin!)

Lucas McCain ("The Rifleman")

Reflexes:  8
Marksmanship: 10
Resolve:  9
Hardiness:  8

Hoss Cartwright ("Bonanza")

Reflexes:  5
Marksmanship:  6
Resolve:  9
Hardiness:  10

Ben Cartwright ("Bonanza")

Reflexes:  5
Marksmanship:  7
Resolve:  9
Hardiness:  7

Al Swearingen ("Deadwood")

Reflexes:  7 (kind of quick from much practice slapping prostitutes)
Marksmanship:  6
Resolve:  8 (evil, but no coward)
Hardiness:  10 (his grit during that bladder stone removal episode was truly impressive)

Historical

Wyatt Earp (historical, not TV or movie)

Reflexes:  8
Marksmanship:  8
Resolve:  9
Hardiness:  8

Doc Holliday

Reflexes:  9
Marksmanship:  7 (every other account I've read of him, he misses, but he's also drunk.  Not sure how accurate he was.)
Resolve:  10
Hardiness:  2

John Wesley Hardin

Reflexes:  10
Marksmanship:  9
Resolve:  9
Hardiness:  5

Wild Bill Hickok

Reflexes:  9
Marksmanship:  10 (if that 75 yard, smoothbore pistol shot-through-the-heart was skill and not luck)
Resolve:  9
Hardiness:  8

Tom Horn

Reflexes:  7
Marksmanship:  10
Resolve:  9
Hardiness:  8

Billy the Kid

Reflexes:  9
Marksmanship:  9
Resolve:  9
Hardiness:  9

Pat Garrett

Reflexes:  5
Marksmanship:  4
Resolve:  8
Hardiness:  5

Jesse James

Reflexes:  7
Marksmanship:  8
Resolve:  8
Hardiness:  6

Frank James

Reflexes:  6
Marksmanship:  9
Resolve:  9
Hardiness:  6

Cole Younger

Reflexes:  7
Marksmanship:  9
Resolve:  9
Hardiness:  9

And of course myself (just kidding):

Reflexes:  10
Marksmanship:  10
Resolve:  10
Hardiness:  10

Numbers in bold have been modified per the advice of the folks in this thread.

Rowdy Bill, this looks like fun...But your giving the Cartwrights more credit than deserved. If it wasn't for Law Books and the Sherriff and Hopsing they would have not lasted a winter in the West. Somebody should have done a DNA study on those sons. ;D

Your describtion of Hardness, I find hard to rate....If you are shot and survive shouldn't that be a ten. Unless it's self inflicted then it should be moved to the Stupid catagory. Being shot at is a different story now, there are many of us in here who have been shot at.

I'll tell you what I think on the Historical side of this: All others I will agree with, but Billy, Change his Hardiness to a 9 and Pat G. give his Reflexes a 5, Marksmanship a 4, Resolve an 8, Hardiness a 5, then you wil have a more accurate Picture of what Really happened with them.

I'm not sure about your hardiness score for Younger.  Wasn't he propped up in that photo?  Seems hardiness should be counted for standing on your own accord, not propped up! :-\

After watching the recent episodes of Deadwood, I'd bump up Al Swearingen's resolve and hardiness to 10s. Was it anything other than pure resolve that got him to push the stones out rather than face the shaking knife? That had to be unbelievably painful. His resolve and hardiness got him back on his feet and out on his balconey within a matter of days, even though the doc thought he had a small stroke. Yep, 10s in my book.

Al gets a 10 in my book also.  Yep, Deadwood is the bestest.  Watch it about 3 times a week.  I get 7 HBO channels, different time zones, different times, LUV IT.
