i noticed on a belt I made, when it got wet,....sweat,  rain,...whatever,.....the dye runs.....

I sealed it with atom leather balm,.....and also put sometan cote on it,..not really knowing what I was doing.

Do you guys ever intentionally wet a piece after finishing it? To see what'll come off? Is that a good idea? Like I thiught I might dunk a whole belt and holster in water AFTER it's finished,...and then wipe off any run-off and re-seal it?

Farmer,
How did you treat your leather before you put on the  atom leather balm? I am not going to be a lot of help to you, because I use all natural dyes! The only thing I can think would be that you  didn't treat the leather good before you put on the  atom leather balm!

WC,..I used acrylic Mahogany Fieblings,.........On the inside of the holster,...and he outside. The outside isn't too much of a problem,......it's pretty slick polished,..but on the fleshy inside,..what should I do to that? I don't think I sealed the inside,...hmm,....that might be my problem,................

I didn't do anything to the flesh side of the belt for fear of the same,........but if i want the fleshy side dyed too,...can I just put balm,...or resolene,..on there?

I have acrylic resoline,..but it doesn't polish up nice like the atom wax balm,.........

That is the problem. Acrylic dye is paint and it just sits on top of the leather. If you want to use it you need to apply it in thinned down coats, but you will probably still have bleeding problems. I would use a couple of good coats of finish to try and seal it.

Ah.....I didn't know the difference in dyes.....there's so many different ones.
I tried thinning it,.....first with water,....then with alcohol,.....then with neatsfoot oil,...none of them seemed to  mix with the dye,....the dye particles just swam around in the cup,..seperate from whatever medium I tried to use. :(

I also discovered ants love neatsfoot oil! I left some on a swab on my bench,..and in the morning,..I had ANTS all over the place!! ;D....off topic,...but just thought I'd mention it.....lol

It should thin with water. It just takes a lot of shaking.
