Arizona Cattleman

Well I knew I was spending too much time on this forum.  You pards looked like you really enjoy yourself and get a lot of gratification in the leather projects you do that I went out and signed up for Tandy's discount card, bought a starter tool set and my first project a "Hat Band"  It turned out pretty good.  I dyed the leather, installed the buckle, and put minature Texas Star rivets on.  Sorry I don't have a way to take pics yet.  Probably for the best.  It was fun and I will enjoy bigger and more complicated projects.  A fledgling crafter is born!!!!  Thanks for the inspiration pards.

Just completed the second hatband, this one has spots 1" apart.  Turned out even better.....

Good for you, there isn't any reason at all why we should be having all the fun and you sitting on the outside looking in, this was the best decision you could have made, I know you'll love it, and working with leather never gets old like some hobby's due, IMHO there is an endless amount of knowledge to be learned here, I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have, :D

Again Welcome to the Leather Shop  :D ;D :D

                                              Best Regards

Very good Cattleman! If you get a light on the camera side of that, you might not need any other camera!
Looks like good work on that band too!

Howdy Cattleman,

Welcome to the Leather Shop. Nice job on your Hatband. That's a great start.

The cool part of making your own Leather gear is when someone asks where you bought that and you can say "I made it myself".

We look forward to seeing your future projects

Good job there Cattleman, and I agree with the others about the camera. A little light and you've got it make. Welcome to the wonderful (sometimes challenging) world of leather work, and the Forum, JD

Thanks for your support, first question... If you had to recommend a book that would get me started which one would that be?

Howdy Cattleman,

If you are planning on making Holsters, try the book by Al Stohlman called "How to make Holsters".

You may want to check out the DVD by chuck Burrows called "Frontier Holsters". It is an excellent source of information on Holster making.

There are actually three books I would recommend as first books for the beginning leather crafter/holster maker and all three are by Al Stohlman.  HOW TO MAKE HOLSTERS, LEATHERCRAFT TOOLS and HAND SEWING LEATHER are what I consider to be the Bibles of leather working.  It just so happens that if you are interested in these three books, I know an old redneck that seriously overstocked thes some years back and would probably sell a set of all three books new for $20 plus actual shipping.  This guy has also been known to throw in a few extras when his shop is really buried up under leather STUFF!

Arizona Cattleman

Would you be that redneck Bob?  You got yourself a deal if you are...   My e-mail is lpatten@live.com if you want to send me an address to send a check or money order your choice.

It is a dark and perilous journey you have embarked on my friend. Filled with a ton of good times and plenty of satisfaction to go around.  Just enjoy the ride.
