Springs

I just put a Wolfe reduced spring in my SAA Premium, and Lee Gunslingers in my Rodeos.  The Lees seem mighty light.  I wanted light, of course, but man... I'm wondering how good they'll do touching off the primers.

Do any of you run light springs in your USFA's?  How are they doin'?

I personally have had good luck with Wolff springs, and even those I find light.  They usually come in around 2 1/2 lbs. for trigger pull.  I like closer to 3 lbs. on a good action job is best.

I, too, have been using the Wolff springs for some time now and have never experienced any difficulties with them.

Thanks for the replies.

The Wolf feels a little stiffer than the Lees, but still a lot lighter than the original main spring.  Meant to get to a CAS match today to try them out but we didn't get going in time....

I believe Longhunter uses Lee springs when he tunes up the USFA's he sells.  I have 4 of them and have had no problems.

Lees in my Cattleman was about 50percent ingnition on CCI's,,,a bit better on Winchesters and set off most Federals. I took the cursed whussy things out ,,a gun that fires 'sometimes' ain't much better than one that will not fire at all. At least with the latter , you are certain of the state of affairs.

I have a couple of Longhunter Specials and a couple of other USFAs that I've installed the Wolff Springs in myself.

They ALL work for me, all of the time.  ;)

I have had no problem with Winchester primers in my SAs, wherein Lee springs are installed.

I have wolfe springs in all 5 of my USFA . They have never let me down . They are my choice . ;D ;D ;D ;D

As a follow-up to my original post...

I ended up taking the Lee's out of my Rodeos. They felt too light and the action didn't feel as solid as it had.  And I think they contributed to a problem I had with primers backing out.  I've left the Wolfe in my Premium SA, and it has run great through several matches.  So a little while ago I bought a couple of more Wolfes, and if when I get the Rodeos back they'll get switched out.

I had to shorten the Wolfe to get it in the SA.  I've heard they'll go right in without any mods, but the W. spring was a lot longer than the original.

JD Yellowhammer,

That wolff being to long is bizarre.  I have changed over a dozen USFA's over to Wolff springs and never encountered one to long.

I also changed my SIG P220's over to Wolff springs and have had a flawless operation with them as well.

J.D. Yellowhammer

If When I get my Rodeos back and change out the springs I'll take a picture.  Hmmm, maybe I've still got the stock Premium SA spring kickin' around here somewhere--I'll photograph it alongside the new Wolffs I got fer the Rodeos...

Were your Wolff's longer than the stock springs (but they still fit)?  Mine were longer and I tried to get them in, but quit when it looked like I'd have to manhandle them to get them in.  Maybe they would have fit if I got them in place(?).  I ended up grinding off some length to make 'em fit.

Here's a Lee Gunslinger, the stock spring from my Premium SA, and a Wolff.  Although the difference doesn't look that great in a picture, it makes a big difference in fitting them.

(the Lee looks like the base isn't even but that's because the curve makes it sit a little off the ground--it's actually even with the bases of the others)

JD, As the others have posted, I have used both the Lee and Wolf springs with no problems. I have never taken my Premium's from Long Hunter down to see what spring he uses. I just know they are smooth and work very well. So much so that I ordered another set in Rodeo's and 44-40. Later David

David, I'm pretty sure Longhunter uses the Lees.  I'd sure like to get some of his guns. Specifically, my when-I-hit-the-lottery list includes a couple USFA .44-40 Premiums with 5 1/2" barrels.

I use Lee's and Wolff all the time in all kinds of different SAA's.  Having to trim the length is not uncommon and no big deal.  That's what they make belt sanders for.  When you are fitting the spring make sure that when it is cocked, the spring does not bump the back of the hammer.  If it does, grind it down a little.

J.D. Yellowhammer

I used the bench grinder on the Wolff in my Premium SA.  And another important thing--I radiused the sharp edges with a hand file (helps prevent spring breaking).  I didn't shorten the Lees, though, and they had enough bow when installed to clear the hammer. Maybe the Wolff woulda, too, but I didn't try.

JD, who did you buy/get the springs from, I have a reason for asking.

The last ones I got (just recently) were from Brownells.  But I may have bought the ones before that from someone else, don't remember. Might have also been Brownells. How come?

The reason I asked, was this is what I thought when you said you got the wrong size spring, as much as I like Brownells, they evidently are still having trouble with coding on there Wolff Springs, they have sent me the wrong springs twice now, the last time they did this I called them and they told me they sent me the right parts based on the codes they called for, so I called Wolff, and told them my problem, they told me that Brownells sent me the wrong springs, and that Brownells was having trouble in coding the parts sent to them my Wolff, so I ordered them direct from Wolff, and got the right ones, and I been dealing with Wolff Springs direct ever since for all my spring needs, go to   www.gunsprings.com  this is Wolffs web site where you can buy direct from them.

I hope this will help the next time you need springs
