Hello,

I am buying a Remington Pocket Pistol to use in the pocket pistol stages ... but the Remington has such a short little grip!

I just got done reading the SASS ROI on grips:

In one place, it says:

* Grips or stocks of simulated or natural materials are acceptable provided they are not
customized to constitute a "target" grip or stock. That is, they must be of the same basic
shape as grips or stocks found on original firearms.

In the next line, it contradicts the 'same basic shape rule' by saying:

*Revolver grips must conform to the front and rear of the grip frame but may extend beyond
the bottom surface.

I would like to have some grips made that extended the weapons grips beyond its frame at the bottom, to make a 'bird's head' grip out of the standard Remington one ... this would give me enough room to get my whole hand on the grip.

I don't want to spend the money on custom grips only to have some person in the club complain that I did not live up to the 'Rules of the Game' or some such, and not be able to use the grips.

What is the opinion on this from a person who acts as a Range Officer? Have you ever seen this done on small revolvers like the Remington 1863 Pocket Pistol or the Colt 1847/1848/1849 Baby Dragoons and Pocket Pistols?

Inquiring minds want to know....

Go ahead and do it.  Let someone else be the donkeys rear end and complain - but just in case, carry the original grips w/ you for awhile.  Just my two cents.

Sorry, I just re-read your post.  I'm not an RO.  Good thing too, I obviously can't follow instructions.

Jimmyb.1;

You're opinion is definitely worthwhile and gratefully accepted.

I was just hoping the 'RO' thing might get someone who has dealt with this problem to come forth ....

And you notice that yours is the first, so no one seems to be biting .....

Well, I'm a RO but this question could be up for debate on just how long you make the grip. If you are talking about extending the grip to where you can put a full hand on it, I will say no go. If you are just going past the bottom by a 1/4 inch then it might get approved and then it might not. Why not touch base with hipshot SASS #7 . He is one nice guy to talk with and will give you a straight answer. Other wise you might have a local OK the grip and then you attend a Regional match and get turned down on it being legal.

As a RO, I think the bird's head lengthened grips being not of the original shape on this revoolver they are not legal.

But if you make grips only lengthened to you hand size, but havin the same shape as the original ones, I mean you make the same grips as original but the butts are only longer with a filler to accomodate the steel part, these nesw grips will be in the spirit if the rules and will be legal.

It's my 2cents worth

Fair Shake and Curly Red Rider,

Thanks for your thoughts and interpretation .... I go out to shoot today, and will know what it is like shooting this little miniature pistol.

At .32 cal. and around 700 FPS, I am guessing that this might be like shooting a hot .22 ... if so I am probably fine with the l2 1/2 inch tall factory grips ... but I will know for sure after the firing range.
