Paper patch?

Two Rivers Marshal

Howdy folks,

Recently purchased an Uberti High Wall in 45-70.  Finally got to take it out and throw a few pieces of lead out of it.

Had to use smokeless loads as I didn't have any empty brass to load with black, and the store didnt sell black loads. (will be reloading with black in the future.)

This shoot was mostly so I could go play with my new family member.  Shoots a bit to the right, but figure next time out I can work on adjusting that.

Now for the question ( kind of a long winded way of getting to it)

I have seen some folks that paper patch and other that use regular lubed bullets.  Is there a benefit to paper patching?
Do you do this rather than lubing them or do you have to do both?  Really dont know much about it.  And most of what I have read tells you of this load and that load folks use, but don't really explain why they do it.

Appreciate your help in understanding this process.

Do yourself a favor and shoot grease groove bullets with real BP for a few years before attempting the master the PP bullet. Seriously, they are a LOT of work and are a world unto themself and work best with a tight chamber. I've shot PP since 1982 and I am still learning.  ;)

Marshal - any benefit to PP'ing?
Back in the 1800's, PP rounds with original gunpowder were used extensively for long range matches, including the international 1000yd Creedmoor matches.  Shooters who were adapt at loading these rounds found them to be very accurate.

OK, why?  Here's some excellent reasons ... http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showpost.php?p=612771&postcount=7

For those that didn't want to wrap their own ...

And here is a chart of Sharps PP bullets

Figured it would be a bit of work.  Does have the cool factor though.  Will stay with the lubed bullets for a while.  Still have to get a chance to work up some loads and see what it likes.  Then maybe see about the world of paper patching.

Appreciate the comments.

Nope no real benefit to paper patching. It was the way things were done for a short while in the late 1800's, but if you notice its been somewhat of a lost art for something over 100 years now, folks mostly shoot grease grooves, and that should tell you something right away quick.
That said tho , once you get the hang of a good load with black and grease grooves paper patching is something that withou alot of added expense will add new deminsion to your shooting pleasure.
Eat more beef the west wasn't won on a salad.

Have to agree wit h the others here, stick to GG bullets fer a while and see how that progresses b'fore trying the PP route. Every thing I've read about PP shooting seemes to indicate that it's almost as much an art as a science. Some of the top shooters in the the game use PP bullets, but they've been experimenting a LOOOOONNNNG time to get where the are now with those paper patched hunks of lead.

Cuts - I too am in that league of experimenting a LOOOOONNNNG time!  And I have read all the books - can wrap and load with the best of them but just can't get the same MOA's that I get with GG's. Then again, all my BPC rifles have stock throats.  There is hope for me though.  I have a 45-70 being chambered  to 45-90 with a long throat that just might do the trick.  But you have to admit, they sure are pretty with that white shirt sticking out of the case  ;D

Rekkon I got around 15 yrs before I can retire, so this could be something to keep me occupied when that time comes around.  Figure by then I might have gotten the hang of everything else.  Really enjoy CAS and there are a couple ranges around that shoot BPCR matches so I got the itch to get a new shooter ( and the wife allowed me to scratch it) Now I have something else to drive the better half crazy.

I still hand load with the same single stage press I've had for dang near 20 years.  Seems once I start something, I like to take the time to tinker with it, so the long days of trial and error I kinda look forward to.  Paper patching looks like that will leave me loads of tinker time.  But for now, will stay with the grease groove bullets and have fun.

I 'm on that list of want to try PP but at 62 I still don't have the regular bullets down pat yet. I think if one has the time and does not mind some failure then it would be like anything else in our sport, a new dimension.
