Hope this is the correct forum for this question. Has anyone here had any dealings with Springfield Research Center (SRC)? After subscribing to their publications, I emailed a question over a couple weeks ago followed by a request for a serial number lookup in their data base on a US Cavalry Colt 45. I'm not in any hurry for a response, but I was hoping they would at least acknowledge receipt of my email. Is this normal and how long have responses been taking to receive any information from past experiance? Thanks

If I remember correctly - SRC is a one-man shop - dependent upon his schedule.

It 'is' Summer' - the season for vacations, graduations and weddings - so be patient.

As to a serial number search - there are a number of ways to figure out when it was made - fewer when it comes to trying to authenticate a piece, and martial Colts are notoriously hard to authenticate.

That's why there are several volumes dedicated to just those Colts.

Good Luck!

St George,
Thank you for your quick response to my question. I'm really not in any hurry. It's just that I didn't want to wait 2 months without a response from SRC before realizing that my first email to them was not received. I also didn't realize that it was a one man show. I have 4 or 5 good reference books on these Cavalry Colts including 2 Kopec books on the subject. My only interest in contacting SRC was to see if they had any information as to what Cavalry outfit it was issued to. With a little luck , he may have information on it.

SRS has/had an online feature that sometimes comes pretty close to the unit a piece was issued to.

The problem is if the initial unit was ever cross-levelled or if their weapons went into storage for any time - and then gaps appear.

I've seen this primarily with Krags, though - but then, those were what I was looking for.

John Kopec also can help - but he charges a fee and I have no idea what that might be.

Again - Good Luck!
