Howdy... New Remmy owner here. The spring is too strong fer me ta shoot duelist. So having read posts here I have ordered the light spring from VTI. Thought I might read up on how ta change it.

With the grips off the gun, loosen the strain screw in the front of the gripframe until it no longer touches the mainspring.  Press, or knock the spring out to either side with a wood or brass rod.  It may fly off on you, be careful.  Replace the new spring by locating the tip under the hammer's wheel, and twist and bend the base (you may need pliers) until you can start it into the slot in the gripframe.  Tighten the strain screw to your taste.

Thanks Flint. Got spring today and put it in. Feels like a whole different gun.

What this means, it turns out, is if you tighten the strain screw too much, the hammer's wheel will slip underneath the spring.  If this happens, back off the screw until the hammer works properly.

I have a question.  My Uberti 1875 has a hard spring also.  Who sells replacement springs?

You got the spring put in by Mongo.  Here is the direct link that will give you what you need.

PS  I find that using a thickness of duct tape instead of a doll rod as a fulcrum works better for me.  It wont slip around like a doll will.

Here's how I remove and replace my mainsprings on my 1875's.  I usually do this when deep cleaning so I've already removed the trigger but I assume you can do this without removing it.

Back out the spring tension screw

Remove the hammer screw and the hammer will move up under the force of the spring.  This relieves just enough tension so that the old spring can be easily tapped out of the grip frame.

Now with the hammer still pushed up you can install the new spring.  The tension required to install the spring is greatly reduced.

Hook the top end of the spring under the hammer wheel and then I use a 1/2" piece of leather to cushion my thumb as I push  the bottom top corner of the spring end up to bend the spring and down to insert the end into the grip frame.  I do not need to use any tools to get the reduced mainsprings in place.

Once the spring is in place I align the hammer with the screw hole and insert the hammer screw.

Hope my explanation was clear.

Now this is a posed pic so the pistol already has a main spring installed but I'm trying to show you how I push the spring in using a piece of leather to protect my thumb.

I finally got around to putting the lighter main spring in.  It only took a little bit of time.  Now I will have to get over to the range and see how it works.  I can tell one thing though, it is much easier to cock the hammer on my 1875.   ;D

It should reduce the hammer pull as well so be careful till you get used to it.  Mine went down to about 2.5lbs.

Shotgun Franklin

I have a '75 and have shot it several hundred rounds. I was wondering if just backing off on the tension screw would reduce the trigger pull or is this a bad idea? BTW, my gun shoots just fine as is, I'm just curious. Even shooting Gunfighter I shot 2 stages clean with the best time. I like my '75, I wish Remington still made'm.

Anything that lightens the hammer should also lighten the trigger.  I was happy with my stock springs until I got the lightened one....made a big difference in the pistol.
