Any one here use TrailBoss Powder in a  shotgun?

I am trying to just use one powder if possible and am looking for a TrailBoss load for my 16 GA...

Any use it or know of some approved load sata I could "borrow?"...that is, if it's safe in shotguns...I am just starting to use this new fangled "smoke-less" stuff after being a BP shooter for years...

Thanks!

Go to the makers website and look.  If they don't list it, then don't do it, they know more about their powder than anyone here does.  If it is suitable they'll offer data. ;)

As far as I know, there's no data for shotshells with TrailBoss. pistol caliber rounds and some rifle, but no shotshells.........Buck ::)
I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

This is what the IMR site says:

TRAIL BOSS
Trail Boss is designed specifically for low velocity lead bullet loads suitable for Cowboy Action shooting. It is primarily a pistol powder, but has some application in rifle. It is based on a whole new technology which allows very high loading density, good flow through powder measures, stability in severe temperature variation and most importantly, additional safety to the handloader.

Trail Boss handgun data and rifle data are available.

I'd guess it's not the burn characteristics but the bulk that is the reason they don't have shotshell data.

Trail Boss' burn rate is just one step above Bullseye, way fast for shotgun loading, plus when those cute little donuts get busted it gets to be really squirrely stuff. The compression used in loading shotgun loads is the main factor for not using trailboss, the fast burn rate is the second reason.

Makes sense, never seen on a chart where the burn rate was.

All good info...Thanks!

I guess I'll switch to UNIQUE powder for Shotshell and save the TRAILBOSS for my 38 and 45.

If you have to buy some powder for that 16 ga, just for fun go to IMR's site and look at the SR7625 data and give that a try.  My late father loaded for 16 ga and that powder was always the best for us, makes nice loads and was very clean burning.  Also pressures tend to be lower than many other powders, helps slow down stress on older guns and those hard to find 16 ga cases.

It's almost a forgotten powder, but a dang good one for 16 and 12 ga and lighter loads.  Some combos in 12 get right down in the 5-6000 psi range.

the "Low Pressure Group" on the 16 gauge forum , as I recall, would agree with 7625.

Dad used that for heavier hunting loads.

For my old Husqvarna Underlever 16's I use 7/8 or 1 oz shot and ONE GRAIN LESS than the lightest load in the manual.
