Bob, the first pair I ever made was when I was a working cowboy. Only earning about $400.00 a month I didn't have any extra money for things like canvas so my first pattern was made from newspaper.  Man did you have to be careful with that stuff. It took a while but I finaly got it done and they came out great. I just wish I had taken a picture of them.

Boothill Bob, email me your address and I will send you a piece of 10 oz cotton duck canvas big enough for one leg, and I will outline the pattern in pencil I used. You can oversize cut it and trim it to suit you.

I'm not a leather person but I enjoy reading and viewing ya'lls TERRIFIC work.

Here is a thought.

Since period chaps were what we call step in and were put on like a pair of pants, why not take a pair of blue jeans and cut the crotch and seat out. Should give you a rough pattern that you can use as a base and you may have to make some adjustments.

Just a thought.

Yeppers, I was thinkin you should probably use a pair a size or two larger. Didn't say cuz I nose ya'll figure it out.

Here in the US you can find used jeans in any thrift shop.  Prices run from $4.99 to about $16 for designer brands and some Levi's numbers.  My wardrobe comes mostly from thrift shops!
