What is everybody's favorite barrel length for a model P/Cattleman and why?

Angel_Eyes

Luke, I think you will find this subject covered many times in earlier threads, if you look through the back pages.

My favorite??? One of each, please!

....and would you believe it is the same one that protects the gutless wonders from any form of retribution, when they slag each other off in the House of Commons. They can say anything they like to each other or about anybody, as long as they say,,,,,,,,,,

Bloody marvelous, aint it, and they say that an Englishman's home is his Castle, you just try pulling up the drawbridge to keep the bloodsuckers out,,,HAH!!!!!!!! (Thank the Lord I'm Scottish!!)(Well,,,half, anyway.)

Sheesh, isn't a newcomer here allowed to ask questions anymore?

Historically, the Colt SAA was sold with more 5 1/2" barrels than any other length.

Personally, I find a 5 1/2" barrel on a Colt or clone to be the most boring length. Aesthetically it just doesn't do much for me. I prefer long barrels, and 7 1/2" was the longest standard barrel on a Colt. But a barrel that long can be difficult to draw from a high riding strong side holster without getting your elbow tangled in your armpit. I wear my 7 1/2" Colt in a cross draw holster, which allows me to draw it more easily. I wear a short little 4 3/4" Colt on my strongside. I love that short, no nonesense length.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

Hi there Driftwood, of course a newbie can ask questions, that was why I tried to direct him to the back pages, where he would find all the info he would need, immediately, without him having to wait for it to dribble in, in fits and starts.
No impatience or slight  was intended.

Driftwood, my thoughts exactly. I dont, and probably wont, own a 5 1/2" barrel SAA.
I like the 7 1/2..but the 4 3/4" better than any.

5 1/2 is , like you said, boring. For me anyways.

Interesting solution - I've been playing around with that a lot as well.

I've got an El Paso Shootist rig that I have holsters for long and short bbl's, drop and cross draw - for each combination.

I think after a year of playing around that I can't tell yet which is better for me!

At present I prefer my Alfonso's Paladin rig with the long bbl's pistol RH straight drop and a 4 5/8 cross draw, but I've also
placed them the reverse and found that equally good - so I haven't a conclusion.

Part of the issue may be that I have a pair of RNV's in 7.5 inch that are fantastic, so I want to use them even if the
holstering isn't practical.

A big part of the issue is that the game makes demands on us that the real world wouldn't - we do need to have two
revolvers on us to play - in real life I'd be happy with a rifle and a pistol, the spare would be in the saddle bags until needed.

My most comfortable rig to date is a El Paso Money belt with a strong side holster lowered 3", and a short cross draw,
but my coolest most stylish rig is the already mentioned Paladin rig!

What's interesting for me is that my favorite barrel length for 30 years was the 4 /58 inch bbl, never cared for the 5.5 inch and
thought the 7.5 inch was rediculous.  Then I bought two and I can't see why you'd want any other now . . . .

I echo El Paso making some good stuff. I have the #44 'Duke' rig for my 4 3/4" SAA, with rough out 'money belt'. I LOVE IT. El Paso makes them like iron, AND classy.

I have and use 4 SAAs all in 5 1/2". They, for me, are easier to handle than the 7 1/2" but in my hands balance better than the 4 /34".  It's like buying boots, try'm on and see what fits you best.
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.
