another one runnin the old IC  lilne

The City of New Orleans
by Steve Goodman

Riding on the City of New Orleans,
Illinois Central Monday morning rail
Fifteen cars and fifteen restless riders,
Three conductors and twenty-five sacks of mail.
All along the southbound odyssey
The train pulls out at Kankakee
Rolls along past houses, farms and fields.
Passin' trains that have no names,
Freight yards full of old black men
And the graveyards of the rusted automobiles.

CHORUS:
Good morning America how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.

Dealin' card games with the old men in the club car.
Penny a point ain't no one keepin' score.
Pass the paper bag that holds the bottle
Feel the wheels rumblin' 'neath the floor.
And the sons of pullman porters
And the sons of engineers
Ride their father's magic carpets made of steel.
Mothers with their babes asleep,
Are rockin' to the gentle beat
And the rhythm of the rails is all they feel.

CHORUS

Nighttime on The City of New Orleans,
Changing cars in Memphis, Tennessee.
Half way home, we'll be there by morning
Through the Mississippi darkness
Rolling down to the sea.
And all the towns and people seem
To fade into a bad dream
And the steel rails still ain't heard the news.
The conductor sings his song again,
The passengers will please refrain
This train's got the disappearing railroad blues.

Good night, America, how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.
We done it for Dixie,  nothing else

There's an elephant on the engine he's headed down the track
With a goose on the caboose and a chicken ridin' in back
There's a horse upon a handcar and zebras in the railyard
Oh, the fun has just begun when the animals ride the train

There's a bullfrog on a boxcar with a lizard and a snake
A gorilla on a gondola how much more of this can i take
There's a hippo on a hopper and a hog in a helicopter
Oh, the fun has just begun when the animals ride the train

There's a whale in the water tower just swimming 'round and 'round
There's monkeys on the crossing gate just hanging upside down
There's a tiger and a mouse and a seal in the station house
Oh, the fun has just begun when the animals ride the train

There's a turtle on a tanker, he's thinking he's found a friend
There's a lion on the loading dock and a bear just around the bend
There's donkey on a dumper and a pony on a pumper
Oh, the fun has just begun when the animals ride the train
Oh, the fun has just begun when the animals ride the train

Ya ever been through Monroe, Virginia on the train??
Ain't much there anymore...just a remnant of a train yard and what it used to be.

Good one of him singing it, Jethro Burns on the mandy-lyn, us old pharts will remember Jethro as a comedy act with his friend Homer.

The two do a great job on the song, may they both rest in peace.

last time I flew into LA International was 40 years ago this next month,  got on one of them people moving sidewalks,  thought I'd seen it all  ;D    Music was blarin away when we walked outside.  Simon & Garfunkle

Hello darkness, my old friend,
Ive come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of
A neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one deared
Disturb the sound of silence.

Fools said i,you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you.
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon God they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the signs said, the words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls.
And whisperd in the sounds of silence.
