Here's the deal. I bought this '61 Navy Sheriff's Model Conversion in a pawn shop about 5 years ago for $90.  I have shot some "new" .38 Long Colt rounds out of it, but the accuracy is crap because the bullets are .357 going down a .375 bore. So I want to come up with a BP load using a 148 gr. hollow-based wadcutter bullet. Got any recommendations on grainage of the Holy Black, and/or Trail Boss? I can also use .38 Special cases in the gun.

I hear APP & HBWC makes for a good load, but I'venot tried this combo.

My Pa has several .375 bore conversions that we shot with genuine gunpowder, the HBWC bullet was packed with homemade (but stiffer) version of SPG. Just enough powder to touch the lube (no compression). For smokeless, I recommend starting with the minimum loads and work up the charge. Shoot on paper, look for no keyholes & tightest group. You'll find the right load this way. The minimum load is generally not very accurate. I think dad uses Clays, but don't remember the loads.

BTW, we shot lots of .357 bullets in these guns and had no difficulty keeping all the shots on my local SASS club targets.

well i can tell you that 1.3 cc of BP or APP makes fro a good load of powder for the 148 and 158 grain bullets in 38 colt or 38 special cases.

My load is 1.3cc (15 gr. volume) of Pinnacle 3FG behind the Speer 148 gr. HBWC. Good accuracy at CAS distances.
