G'Day WC,Looking really good pard, are those brass tacks on the rear of the cantle?? I have just been given an old western pony saddle that is fairly well worn, but it has all the fittings. What is your best idea on how to strip it & use the old leather for a pattern. This will be my 1st attempt at saddle work any info will be appreciated.Feathers

Howdy Pard
Take lots of pix as you take parts off. Use a mix of saddle soap and water to soften the leather and get the parts flattened out. Watch out they don't shrink on you. Make hard paper patterns as quick as possible.
The first saddle I built was a slick fork pony saddle.
Hope this helps.

Sorry forgot to answer the first question. They are brass plated Escutcheon Pins. They also hold the front and back of the Fork cover down underneath.

G'Day WC,Thanks very much for the info-After I strip it down & do as you advised I'm only recovering it for appearance-it is going to end up as lamp stand for my bar, with the shade covered in cowhide. Will post pics as I go.Feathers

Boy Wayne, that's just looking better and better all the time. You ought to knock those judge's socks off!

Rick, that's pretty good harp playing. I'm using one this morning for a song at church, but I'm not as good as you are. JD

Been awhile since I posted on this one.
WC, that is coming along beautifully!! It is definately a work of art. Such delicate lines compared to most of what is seen.

Are you coming thru Nebraska on your way in October?

Howdy Pard
Maybe on my way back. I'm taking the southern route to Iowa. The saddle show is in Wichita Falls, Tx. From there I'm going to OK City to the Cowboy Hall of Fame, then to see Ace, then to Iowa. On the way back I'm going to Colorado Springs to the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, to Grand Junction Co to a western museum, then to Farmington NM to spend a couple of days with Bob Beard and watch him make tools.

To bad you can't make a journey a little further north into southern Minnesota. I'm in Mankato not to far off of I35 about an hour north of the Iowa border.

Well shoot WC, you ought to make an entire swing throughout the US and visit everyone! Practical? Not really, but it'd sure be fun. Nothin stopping you but time & money ::)

I wish I could, I have very close friends in Dalbo I haven't seen in years. You could slip down to Winterset and visit me at the festival.
