Thank you for all the kind words, it is a fun project.
Here is the other skirt finished. This one took a bit longer because I had to keep looking at the first one to try and match the cut as close a possible.

WC, if someone didn't know better, they would think you used a machine to make those cuts, and I mean that in a positive way. There is so much precision in what you do, it's amazing to think a person could do all that with a small blade in his hand.

I, like many others am enjoying the installments you are sharing on this new saddle. Thanks for taking time to post these. JD

That looks real nice!
How many sides do you usually use for a saddle? What skirting do you prefur?

Thanks for the step by step... ;).

It takes 2 sides if you don't screw anything up. My first saddle I messed up the seat and had to order another side to finish it.
I use Wicket & Craig skirting.

Thanks, I am just finishing up my saddle and I had to order a third side cause I made it with the big square skirts. I also use W&C but I have been getting saddle leather from Seigel...they don't have it listed yet but they do sell it. There calling it California skirting. The leather is made  especially for them by W&C. I have had mixed results and am thinking of going to Herman for my next saddle. One side Seigel sent was so clean and even. It was a 15oz back and a 14+ belly and even the flank was full thickness and not fleshy, I have never seen anything like it. The next one they sent was not as nice but it had a full 16+ back, it fell off real bad as you got down the side though. They have been calling me for feedback ...they are really trying to offer a good skirting at a fair price and I think they are getting close.

Thanks and keep the pics comming...I'll post some pics of my saddle soon.

cowboyWC....Looking forward to seeing the next step in the process of your contest saddle, beautiful. Where did you come up with the idea for the carving on this particular saddle?

Speaking of Leather.......
The last saddle I built (the Hope Saddle) I used seconds to build it, never again! It took three sides plus to get enough good leather to make it, and cost about the same after everything was done as two premium Herman Oak sides would have cost me. From now on it will be Herman Oak....that is what I used on the prior saddles I've built and I don't think you can beat their leather.

A couple of questions on your casing method, I do the Al Stohlman method where you soak the leather in very warm but not hot water until the bubbles stop (the air leaves the leather) and then put it in a plastic bag until I am ready to work it.

What are the steps in the cold water method, and is that a common method in saddle making? Is the carving and tooling as easy as the Stohlman method? I would like to try it!

Hope you don't mind the questions.
