I have one of the less expensive Pedersoli 45/70 rolling block rifles listed as their # 1. It has a 30 inch, 1 3/16 straight octagonal barrel , brass butt plate, brass trigger guard and the forestock is held in place with a brass barrel band. I have very little money in the gun and I am getting ready to customize this rifle and would like to know if anyone knows the thread size of the barrel?

So far I have poured a pewter nose cap, made a steel trigger guard and butt plate (cheaper to make them then to buy them) and I am either going to re-barrel it or have the Octagon barrel turned half round and tapered. I'll know tomorrow how much it will cost me to have the barrel modified and whether it will be cheaper or about the same price to buy a new barrel for it.

If anyone knows the thread size I could sure use that information.

Bill, send a PM to John Boy over on the Open Range, he stops in here from time to time but is over there more.  He seems to be good at digging up stuff like that.

Found out this morning when I dropped off my barrel I won't need to buy a new barrel for my rolling block rifle.

I can get it turned down to tapered round (just the front 2/3 rds) with a nice wedding band transition into the round section for $40.00, much cheaper then a new one.

I'm having the tapered round section turned from about one inch to .900 at the muzzle, should have a nice balance to the rifle when finished.

Bill,

when they start turning your barrel, ask them to now do too big a cut. Pedersoli barrels are made
from a steel that they purchase from Mauser Werks. This is the reason why Pedersolis are for the most
part world class accurate. The steel has a special composition, temper, etc that helps prevent it from
walking around when it heats up. The steel was originally developed for machine gun barrels if I
am remembering what Dick Trenk (Pedersolis U.S. rep) said about the steel.  you would not want the
gunsmith to upset the balance.

I used to have a Pedersoli creedmore roller with the same profile you are going to get. the only thing
I don't like (and its a personal taste only) is that the taper leaves a bit of a step at the transition, which
you are going to be helping negate using a wedding band at the transition spot.

I currently have a Pedersoli Sharps with a part octagon, part tapered round barrel on it.

Stevens rifles (and currently used by CPA who make Stevens now) had not much of a difference
between the final diameter and the flats on the octagon. makes for a very pleasing transition.

What kind of sights are you going to put on your rifle . I have a remmie that I have been playing with , until the other day never thought about using it as a ground hog  gun . But it works. Good luck with your remmie and happy hunting .

Bill, I believe this is the information you were looking for about Pedersoli barrels ...
The threads are Square threads,  1.130" in diameter.
The threaded portion of the shank ends 0.625" in from the shoulder.
The breech end of the barrel extends past the threaded portion for 0.125" making  a total shank length 0.750"
Thread relief cut is 0.175" wide
Total length of the threads is 0.450"
Pitch is 10 threads per inch.
Thread width is 0.050"
Thread depth is 0.030"

Thread relief diameter is 1.012"
The Shoulder at the tulip is 1.240" in Diameter

Glad I could help you.  This is not the kind of details normally discussed on BPCR forums.  I suck in any information that is note worthy and have sub-directories on my computer for each rifle that I own.  This data was posted on the now defunct MSN Groups bpcr forum by Tom Myers
