Rowdy, when I redid mine last winter, I used paint remover and a plastic scraper.  I did not use any sandpaper.  It took awhile but with perserverance it is not too hard to do.  Then I used linseed oil rubbed in thoroghly for 5 coats and then a follow up coat of tung oil so that there would not be any spotting.  It turned out really well.  I did use a stock stain and if you are interested, will let you know what it is.  There is an earlier post that outlines this same treatment that I used as a copy for the way that I did mine.  It really looks great and sort of original.

Thanks for the info. I am planning on redoing my 76 after Deer season . Trying to figure out how big of a Pain this will be .

The actual scraping and swearing took the better part of a day.  The rubbing, etc. took the better part of two weeks but it was worth it.

Still have not had an opportunity to shoot my Chappie.

I played with it last night though and noticed that I could take the sliding piece on the rear sight off and by putting the adjust ment screw on the close to barrel side - the open sights are visible again.

I think I will order a replacement sight but want to test fire the gun first.

I hope to be able to shoot the gun this weekend but still awaiting brass and ammo

Rowdy:  If you are interested, send me your e-mail and I will send you some pics of my rifle.  Since I can't seem to work this site in sending anything that would be the way to do it.

OK - I had to take the adjustable piece off of the rear sight to allow the use of the sight.

The screw head holding the adjustable piece was blocking the view of the front sight blade.

Anyone else noticed this on the NWMP carbine?

How do  you like your carbine ? What caliber did you get ? Would you buy the carbine if you had it to do over ?

Pony Racer

The carbine fit and finish are wonderful

The blueing is deep and the actual wood finish is very nice.

With the exception of the rear site set-up I am very happy with gun.

The action is a little stiff but not bad compared to any new gun I have bought within last few years.

The 45-75 is very hard to find but the 45-60 is still available.

Hey PR,

Since you are in my neck of the woods, we should get together with our '76s one day at NVGC.  Mine's an Uberti in .50-95.  It makes a BIG boom and lots of smoke ;D  I'm outta town this weekend for a Civil War living history, but down the road a bit we should try to get together and rock the Peppermill Creek valley.

NDNCHF - roger that - been to Peppermill a few times.

Hoping to shoot this bad boy soon

RF - my ffl in Surry Va (there are closer ones but i am good friends with the smith there) got it for me through CDNN.

You can google them and pull up their latest catalog.

I believe with shipping, tax and transfer fees it was around 800.00
