Bolt reenforcement

I tried the trick that was posted by someone on the web of drilling and tapping the bolt (in a 66) for a set screw that goes into a slot cut into the firing pin extension, as a safety protecting the shooter from a sheared cross pin, the 1/16 diameter pin through the bolt that holds the extension in place in the older version of the Uberti.  Looks like a good idea.

It did not work out well for me, as when I tried to disassemble the rifle some months later to install a short stroke kit, I couldn't remove the set screw.  I used a slotted set screw, and the head broke when I tried to turn it, leaving me with a screw that couldn't be drilled out because of the half a head left.  It is hard, and a drill bit can't stay centered on it, and it is too deepo in the frame opening to get an end mill to it. An allen screw might have been a better choice in this case, as long as the socket doesn't strip.

In any case, I had to cut the bolt up in place to get at the screw to remove it with a Dremel and parting disks, and replace the whole bolt assembly with the newer Uberti type that is now the only version available.  The plus is that it's a stronger bolt assembly now, the minus, of course, is the expense of the new parts.

Flint, explain this new bolt, please. I see it costs $100.00 on the VTI website!  :o  Has anyone ever seen an older Uberti syle bolt break where it wasn't someone hotrodding smokeless ammo?

FCK, I think the purpose of the setscrew is more geared toward prevention of shearing as a result of an out-of-battery discharge from pulling the trigger slightly too early as the bolt is closing, since the Henry and '66 (except some early ones) don't have the trigger interlock (or whatever you call it) safety of the '73.

Pictures are really needed to explain the new Uberti bolt design, but the bolt and extension are both machined where they join so that a new little angular piece fits in place to lock them together.

Flint, sorry for your troubles but hopefully your explanation will help prevent the same from happening for someone else.

If you get a chance to look at an original Winchester, you will see that the new Uberti design is very similar.  The original Winchester had a one-piece firing pin, and the larger new part (that Uberti put in) was also a cam to retract the firing pin.  since Uberti has a two piece firing pin, it has a spring retraction, so the new, heavier part is just used to retain the extension.

Yes, shooters have had the extension come back in their face from Henry and 66 type actions shooting from an open bolt, as well as the same in 73's whose lever safety has been removed.  Uberti for a short time changed to an .078 diameter pin from the .060, but now has the new part, which is even larger.

The new bolt kit includes the new parts, bolt, firing pin, spring and extension, and you need to get the cross pin that connects to the toggle arms, as the crosspin cannot be removed from the old bolt.

See the exploded view on the VTIgunparts website.

So, how much is the total cost (parts only) to refit an older rifle?  ???

Naturally, that's the only receipt I can't find.  Seems it was about $110 or so with shipping.

Hey folks, here is a series of very descriptive photos of an Uberti '76 "innards" and they make reference that the new '73 is similar.

Howdy

Happy Trails installed such a set screw in my Henry to keep the firing pin extension from flying in case of an out of battery discharge. If I recall correctly, the screw is installed in the frame, not the bolt. But I will have to take the gun apart to make sure. Will post photos if I do.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

Happy Trails set screw goes thru the bottom of the Breach Block into the bottom of the extension rod.

The new Breach Block & Extension Rod from Uberti is "better?" different.  Just expensive if all you have buggerd up is the Breach Block :-(
