Hi Otto,

I checked on your serial # 48797.    It falls in between 48745 - a Spencer Carbine issued to a member of Co. F, 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry on or about 02-28-1865, and 48828 - a Spencer  Carbine issued to a member of Co I, 19th New York Volunteer Cavalry, on or about 10-??-1864.

There were no other listed serial #s that you could use as a reference point.  So your Spencer could have been issued to either unit along with other similar serial #s.  Best I can do for you.

Did you get my Email on this ?

A Saddle ring and staple can be had from S&S firearms.  As for shooting it.  With a center-fire conversion breech block, brass, mold, and dies from Buffalo Arms, and real black powder, it should be safe.  Not a high pressure round. It should be checked over for bore, and cracks in receiver.

Many shooters on this board have originals and shoot them regularly. I had three different 56-56s and fired them all.  Great fun.  The necessary Rapine mold for the heeled bullet is hard to find, but might be had from Rapine if you are patient, or sometimes on the N-SSA forum.  Good Luck and enjoy!
