Hi, Angel Eyes. A pencil roll is a slight upward roll at the edge of the brim, all the way round. I've found a good example just a few moments ago: go to Rand Hats and see their Boss of the Plains. It's listed under 'Old West'.

A picture from here and answering both, reissue from Stetson of their Big 4 that came out in the late 1880's:

SL if you are thinking about buying a Rand, good choice, most likely the best.

I've got a Rand built to my specs for a dress hat:

Ritch Rand is also one of the most knowledgable hat historians around.

Yep, you do clean up right smart. If we could teach you some polite town manners we could take you out most anyplace and pass you off as a gent.....maybe!

Will never happen my friend, grew up watching Rawhide and Wishbone was my hero. Would have build a fire in the back yard and tried to cook if Mom hadn't kept the matches away from me.

BTW that hat has just the sides pencil rolled.
