I was at the Cabela's in Dundee, Michigan this weekend, and I finally broke down and bought a Kabar, USMC Short (5.25" blade). I needed something a bit bigger on the trail that just a pocket knife.

Anyway.

Straight out of the box it seemed plenty sharp, but I know better. I know it will be correctly sharp if done properly.

Thing is ... how do I do that without buggering up the black steel?

This would be the knife.

Thoughts?

One word....Lansky

You just can't really do much better than this in IMHO....I use a Lansky to set all my bevels after I build my knives... ;)

You may want to but a bit of a softner (napkin) on the clamp vice if your particular about the finish... ;)

good luck

I aggree with Hank...The lansky system is pretty much foolproof...and I am the fool that should know.

I even built a bigger "Tim Allen" version of the jig to help put in the primary bevel when building knives.

My only thought is that I hope you didn't pay more than $50 for it......I've priced knives there....I live 20 minutes away....and ouch....pretty pricey. :'(

RollingThunder

Hey Rayban. Retails for $65 here locally, I paid 54. Figured I got a deal by comparison. Just remember, there's always someone getting gouged worse than you. LOL.

No matter, though, on the trip I made to Michigan I picked up two Singer leather sewing machines for free. Works out in my book. :D

Two free machines?? Yes, I'd say you done real good....thought you'd have pictures of them by now.... :)

RollingThunder

LOL. I know, I know. I'll have pics this weekend, though. After they're cleaned up and squared away.
