What do you folks like for "old time" knife sheaths?  I have been making some knives and their sheaths (See in knife forum and below) and have been searching books and on-line for ideas and variations.

So far I am partial to the Mexican loop look but am wondering what the group likes to make....and why?

Pretty close to a Randall type grind..That's a hard one to pull off...good job :)

What is the handle material.. ???

The sheath is spot on...if you have'nt done so yet...check out Chucks website..the Wild Rose Trading Co

He really put's it together nice as well... ;)

Those both are great. I like the knife a lot. Beautiful grain on it. The sheath is very appropriate. I lean towards the Mexican loop also. Yours is a fine design. In my opinion, that's a good combination.

Howdy L.A.,
Man I think you have to make what is in your heart!  I have never made one  like that! I think there were a lot of different styles in the 1800's, I also think that 1800-1830 had a style, then you had  3-4 different styles from 1830 - 1860! then when things started heating up before the war, there was a standard style, and then after the war, things got wild, there were the left overs, then some cross between the miilitary style and the cowboy style, and then you had the more elengant sheaths and knifes, like the one that is under Chuck Burrows Avatar.
I find out that if you are not a knife maker (and I am not) then I have to buy the blades and design around it! I pasted on a awesome Swiss made Bowie with a real stag grip for $45.00 and it had a nicely made just plain Bowie Sheath! but I didn't want the sheath, and I would of only wanted the knife  to make a sheath for it, and then try and sale the knife and sheath for $70.00, and I most likely wouldn't ever get it sold.
So make the style of knifes that you like and if you live in a area that has people have money to spend, then cater to that group!
You do nice work, and all you need is to find that market!
Good Luck, thanks for sharing!!

Hank, I don't want to jump in on top of Al but that handle surely looks like curly maple to me. Hard as all heck to carve but shore does finish pretty. If'n you want a hunk for some scales drop me a pm.

Al, I really like the grind on that blade also, and the sheath is very nice.  I like the mexican loop but my favorite is a simple wrap around with no strap or keeper.  GB
Lost..... I ain't never been lost...... fearsome confused fer a month er two once... but I never been lost.

This is the other version I made for ther bone-handled Bowie...

The handle on the first knife is curly maple.

This is a bit of "Old Hat" for some as I have posted it before. ::)
The good news is there are two more on the bench now, which means I'll something new to show. :D

I like the Mexican Loop sheath that you have done...Never have done one, but would'nt mind giving it a try... ::)

Now with that said...got any special tips... ;) ;D

and you bet GB...I'd love to have some of the ol' curly top...heck I can reciprocate with some Iron wood or Bois d'Arc (Osage)

This one looks just as good, little Al. Nice work on a good design.

Yeah, that looks good, Hank. I like the stacked leather handle on the knife. The sheath carries the color of the handle out perfectly. Nice set.

I like the second one a lot!  I like the use of spots and the double layer at the top....

Mind if I "borrow" the concept in the future?

Marshall Will, the main body of the sheath, goes under the belt and the belt thru the slot.
The long slot allows the sheath to lie at an angle...say across your back.
The old mountain-man style, I recon.
But... a loop on the back and you could use it several ways.
Little Al, I recon every thing we do these days is borrowed from the past.
If you like it...have at it!!
The double layer of course strengthens it and it looks kinda cool!!
Man, you make nice knives!!

BH......I like that laced look on a sheath...real purdy

Marshall, that's not stacked leather. It's actually a wood laminate.... ;D.....

OK guys.....here's an Idea...I'm in the process of working out the kinks on this one...(Still dressing it out)... ::)
What kind of sheath do you see this guy riding in....

I see this as being something on the lines of a riverboat gambler type....
wanted to do something fairly dressy....

How about you guys give me some ideas and we'll call this an internet, interactive project.... ;D

Flinch Morningwood

Hank - Sweet knife! What is the handle made from?  What are the dimensions?

I agree with Cowboy316 that it would have to be some that would be easy to access when sitting...maybe a boot sheath?

Going with Doc Holiday and thinking totally off the wall, maybe a modified "huckleberry" type shoulder rig?

Theres a nice pancake version on this site...right side, 7th one down....http://www.rowesleather.com/ks_products.htm

Ten Wolves Fiveshooter

I like that one Al pointed out, it would work real well, a knife like this also works well in the front of the gun belt too, close to either holster on either side, knives like this and daggers were commonly worn like this, I know it's not a hide out knife like a gambler would wear, but this way you could show it off, and still be period. IMHO  ;D

Thanks for the explanation, BH. Nice design.

Good-looking knife, Hank. That one looks like it may need a boot sheath.
