My wife and 12 year  old daughter have started shooting in some matches. They use Ruger 38'e and puma 38 Lever. But for the shotgun, they prefer my 1897 Winchester. Does anyone know a good reloading combination for a lighter recoil that they can handel in the 1897. The factory ammo rocks my daughter pretty good. I plan on reloading the shells for them. Someone suggested red dot with 15 grns and 1 1/8 shot. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I never liked the shotgun before SASS so I started using the Wincester Featherlites. When I couldn't find them on a regular basis I got me self a loader and developed a clone of the FeatherLite. Litterly hundreds of folks have gotten my recipe and each one says they are the same as the FL.

If yer interested in my recipe, drop me a pm or email and I will send it to ya..

A search either on-line with the powder manufactures or looking at their free pamplets will give plenty of light loads, just look for lower velicity ones with less shot.  As a general rule, the less shot and the lower velocity a shell is means it will also have less recoil.  Also with two shells being equal this way, the one using less powder will have slightly less recoil.

This formula will give you a real good idea of the recoil a load will produce.

My wife is recoil sensitive. I've been loading 7/8ths oz. loads for her and myself. I'm currently using Winchester AAlite powder per their specs. Makes for a nice comfortable 12ga load in either of our shotguns. Data should be on Hodgdon's site........Buck 8)
I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....
