With all the talk about Craft tools and qualiity and swivel knives and such..it got me to thinking...

In a thread started by Johhny McCrae regarding grooves and borders and such...you will see Johhny coming up with a personally designed tool. Likewise you willl see where Outrider has offered where he modified a tool with a pully wheel.

http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,22668.10.html

What else is out there? What have you guys come up with that either makes a job easier, cuts cost, or you feel is just something that others could benefit from...

The skys the limit here...take a look around your shop and show us what you have come up with..

Here is a couple from me....

My original (and I still use it from time to time) is a stitch wheel tool made from an antler piece, a 3/8 nut (filed to allow points, and sanded on the sides to make narrow) and a brass pin.

I also have several pics, gouges and stylus tools, that I got from the dentist...They usally throw the broken pieces from the hygienist tools into a box........If he/she will give them away..........Major word of caution here...if you do ask for these tools make sure they have been run through an autoclave... :o :o :o.... i got mine about 25 years ago..... ::)

In this picture there are two tools: One is in the foregorund. It's actually a knife vise made from some pipe pieces and a couple pieces of oak and a hinge. I have used it on occasion to hold leather...like a stitch horse....the narrow throat is easy to work around.

second there is a home made pin block (by the water bottle) that was made from a piece of plate. I have also drilled and tapped it. There are two hold down straps made of flat bar either side..also great for laying a flat piece on and punching through it.

Here..if your familiar with this sort of thing...

Is a table made from aluminum cable tray pieces...you'll notice drawers in the ends..I used the rails of the tray to support the slide in drawers..which are 42" deep btw...

I have several thin bladed knives cut down from old kitchen knives..they generally have bigger handles and the blades can be shapped down as needed....keep in mind..if you do this....keep you temper, by keeping cool....(no I'm not talking about your attitude) keep a bowl of water close and keep the steel cool as you work it down... ;)

OK so what'ya got... ;) ;) let'see yours

I have to say that workshop is outstanding, Hank. Someday I hope to have a decent space like that. Thanks for the pics.

I know I came here to post something, but I find myself just looking at your great work shop, and after salivating for a good while I forget what I was going to post, and this is my fifth time here, Great shop pard, and when I put myself back together I'll be back. ;) 8)

Well thanks for the comments...

No home made tools out there?

I figured you guys would have all sorts of inventions... ;)

I thought of another one today....One of my favorite stamps to use is one that
I made from a brass rod..I filed it to be a deer hoof...it makes for a nice stamp
Here is a well worn and used knife sheath that I use..that has it
Excuse the quality of the picture...I don't have my light box at home...

Hank,
I have about 6-7 stamps I made, maybe more! I had no place to go buy them. And I had no money! So MarshallWill and Outrider told me how to make some, if you want me to post them, i will! Just let me know, if anyone would want to see them or not? I will be making some Old Stamps This Summer! I have some help coming to get my mill up on a bench, and I have to re mount the motor on my lathe. I am only interested in making special stamps. i have picked out a couple out of the Packing Iron book, that i have looked all over and there are none. So I hope to make them.

I thought you were asking about big stuff. Probably half of my stamps are made by me. The awls and knives I use daily, too. My newest one is over on the round kife thread. Here are a few photos. Most of these have been on other threads, but it won't hurt to put them here, too. I have a bunch of other stuff but no photos right now.

Well I was beginning to think I was wierd (er) ..it's been on my mind to make my own craft tools...I know they are under a 10 spot each if you go to Tandy..but just not sure if I couldn't do better...by making my own...

I laike that Star...

thanks for the heads up... :D

I know others do the same thing. I make tools when I want to do something that isn't readily available. Most of them aren't as colorful looking as the ones I posted. BTW, those hoof prints are cool. Nice work.

Howdy fella's,
i was wondering if anyone has ever made there own under cut tool? i don't like the one tany sales #8039-05, even if you are getting to toos for your $15.00, i wamt one with a handle, like George Hurst used!
If no one has made one, but hs one, even if it is a Tandy, if you have a camera with Macro, so you could take super close up pics, I know i can make one, but I need to be able to see how the cut is, because this tool has 3 cutting sides!
I would be so great full if anyone can help!

Well I guess the best home made tools I have would have to start with the stitching mule that Ace Lunger made me, it has made sewing a pleasure for me, and works like a champ, the second would be your method of defusing light when taking pictures of my work, I know I have more, and I will post them as I think of them. Also Ace made me a Black Powder Drop Tube, for loading ammo for my Sharps 45/70 and it will work just fine as soon as I can find some components.

Well the more I dug around in here...the more tools I found that folks had made themselves.

I kinda had the feeling it would be that way...I intend on getting me some Stainless steel rod, and start making stamps as I need em.... :)

I can see that Marshall has been a pretty active guy, in these respects... :D

This site and forum has (let me say it loud) THE VERY BEST folks who share and teach and learn together.
I have found myself wishing we all lived close by...sure would be a good group to hang around with.. ;)

I know with knifemakers, they have what they call "hammer ins." Folks come from all over to a certain destination and and have get togethers and show off thier craft and teach others...It would be cool if that was the case with a group like ours.. :)

Pokey Packrat

Howdy Hank, well here's a maul I made for tooling leather it's filled with lead shot and the weight is forward in the head.

Works pretty good and the balance is nice. The stacked leather handle is really comfortable.             Pokey Packrat
