I sure thought this thread would keep me busy making new stuff.... from the idea's of others ;D

Well I was properly motivated by Marshals head knife so I made one this weekend. It needed a home so I tried my hand at animal carving......They could both use some work but are fully functional... Getting the right facial expression on an animal carving is kind of tough.  :P

I have been using an Ulu knife for so long, and calling it a head knife, that I had no idea how well a real head knife worked....Wow this thing cuts leather.. no more exacto for me :D

Freedom,
I realy like the knife cover! I hope someday, that I can make a buffalo that looks half that good, I have butt stock wraps on my Buffalo guns, and i would to be able to make one with a Buffalo on the Side :) :)

Pokey, I got my round stock in this weekend! And know I am trying to figure out what I am going to do on a handle! I look at some 1" walnut dowel rod yesterday, but it just didn't feel big enough, and i dont have any 2x2 walnut left, and i hate to cut up a old gun stock to  get my wood ::) I just got to think about it!

I want want to thank everyone for the kind words on my stamps, they are noy hard to make, and if anyone wants to make there own stamps and I can help, just pm me.
Pards thets get some new leather on here!! When it warms up I am going to hit the practice table on carving!~

Nice sheath, Freedom. I like the way you slip it in from one side and retain it on the other. Much what I've been thinking about for mine only nicer. I'll probably just rivet mine instead of stitching and call it good.

I thought of using rivets Marshal but the edge is razor sharp and I was afraid I might not cut rivets very well :D. I knew I wanted a welt and I was not to sure how to do it without using a bunch of rivets so I sewed in a thick one, the total thickness is just over 1/2 inch.

Do you recognize the knife Marshal ?? It is more like yours than you know.. I hope not to offend when I say exact "copy" ;D or dare I say print? :-[ I suppose I should of asked you first.  It was sunday and I wanted to get started so I used what I had available. I would like to thank you for the head knife design Will.

Thank you everyone for all the encouraging words. I appreciate it and it sure adds to the fun of making new things when you can show them to others that are into the same things.

Is there special tools for carving animals??

I had a tough time getting my big stamps to work well on the little Buff. This is my second attempt at animals and my fourth carving. I did this moose for some practice. I just layed the coaster on one of my flap holsters to get a idea of how it would look.

I really like what you did with that knife. The handles look great riveted on. You did such a good job on it that I thought it was one you bought. Quick work, too. The design really isn't mine. I copied the curve on an Osborne and made straight lines out of the back edge. It's as much your design as any. You did a great job.

The holster is really good-looking with the carving on it. That moose is fine work. Keep those animals coming.

Marshal...I needed a pattern so I just printed the pictrure of yours and worked it  a little until I had the pattern size I wanted and Sharpied it onto an old tablesaw blade.  The rivets are copper tubbing, I peened some brass rod into them through a couple slabs of elk antler I found/shot?.

Thanks WC "F" series...I'll look into that.

No Ace  the buff is not a  stamp...well I guess it kind of is; about 500 little ones :D  I used mostly the basic 7 stamps and it was a little tough to do that was why the inquirey about Figiure carving stamps.

Thanks guys

Printing out a picture to use for a pattern was a good idea. Can't say I'd have thought of that. Those tablesaw blades work good. That's what I used and it sure is good steel.

Hi Pards,
It was suggested I post this here in the home made tools. I have wanted one of these mauls ever since i got my first Tandy Catalog a little over a year ago. Untill CW316 showed his, I had thought of making one, but I live in no where land. So after CW 316 showed his, i went to searching the net on what they were made out of! When I found that out, I email a good friend of mine down in Tulsa, where you can get stuff, and at the time he is laided off and, he is laid off and being a big wig in the building buiness, he new right were to get it. I had him pick me up some and I made this! I am not sure what it weighs, but it is 3" long and 2 3/4" acrossed, and I love the feel of it and I will try and use it tomorow!
i hope that no one on here thinks that I am showing off, because I am not!! I just can make things, that is what I have done all my life!
I hope you like it !
