Major Matt Lewis

Well esteemed peers of the GAF, it would seem that my life is changing.  Because I have little kids I haven't been able to shoot since last October.  Either Basketball, Soccer or Cheerleading has cut into any Saturday shooting and Old Man Winter pretty much took out the Sundays that I felt like going.   :'(

I have to generally take the kids on the weekends because the wife works just weekends and gets paid as an FTE, which is a good business deal.  It just is really wearing on me now.

Well, anyway I will be formally Commissioned a 2d Lt. in the US Army Reserve next weekend.  I am sure that will eat into my Cowboy Shooting time as well.  I know I haven't been around here much and feel bad about it.  Know that if I am not with you in person, that I am with you in spirit.

Maj Matt.

Life does have a way of doing strange things for us.  Enjoying your children and keeping a roof over your head should take center stage, and I know that my work with the Reserves did take a lot of those weekends.  Your absence has been noted by us but no one will doubt that you are here in spirit with us, and who knows maybe you will squeeze a weekend in to shoot one in a while.

Congratulations Sir

MML I feel your pain.

We have three kids and between doing daddy duties, and work  (12-14 hour days are normal on the staff i work on)- shooting fun takes back seat alot.

Between recent surgery, Girl Scout and dancing recital stuff , not to mention work- I am missing 3 major local shoots, not to mention the monthlies, that I love to do and hoping that two people drop out of MD state match - so I can shoot that one (took time off in case i can get in to that shoot).

Anyway, congrats on the commission, please have someone take pictures and send them out.

Major Matt,
Heartiest congratulations on your commissioning!  We well understand that your family and duties come first.  (My grandfather said, "When work interferes with pleasure...give up work!"  He passed away just shy of 90...after a full day at the office, and a trip to a tax seminar convention! That was his second career...as a tax consultant, after forced retirement at 62!  You reckon he was being a tad sarcastic?  ;) )

We'll look forward to whatever communications and/or events you can make.

Your obedient servant,

Well if you can't do CAS see if ya can't take your cowbow guns out to the range with the kids now and then.  That's what I do when I can.  They like shooting them more than the other stuff and learning about them.  Watching my daughter properly load an 1851 C&B was more satisfying than hearing steel go "ting".

Congradulations on your promotion.  Thank you for your service.

Thanks pards.  It hasn't been easy telling my pards that I can't go with them or to not plan on me making the road trip ect....but I think that in the long run, all will find a way to work out.

I've found over the years that life tends to go in cycles and can get complicated at times.  Sometimes work or family priorities get in the way of doing the things we would rather do.

On the other hand, I've found that my "interests" tends to remain fairly constant though I don't have time to pursue them - and at some point I'm able to get back to them.

Hang in there - the kids will get older and not want you around as much, the weather will improve, the wife schedule will change, and you'll be able to hang up the uniform (again) knowing you've done your duty - and the Colts will be waiting and feeling perfect in your hands when you pick them up.

Got an unwanted but anticipated change yesterday.  After dodging the bullet for 6 years, the lay-offs finally caught up with me.  So I will be pushing to get branch qualified as hard as I can and I talked to my CO lastnight and he is going to try to get me put on orders for AGR to fill in the deadspace.  The Colts are wanting to be shot....and no Fox Creek, you can't have them...LOL.  They stay in the family.
