Wanted to learn a little more between these two powders. I dug down deep with the search in several forums and learned...well a little bit!!

Just between these two powders (Cartridge vs Cowboy) which is best for the 44-40 rifle (Winchester 73 Uberti 24" barrel) for shooting whitetail deer at 100 yards or less and of course the designation F, FF or FFF if it applys.

Also, as above and just for kicks, which is best for a 44-40 revolver 5.5 barrel at shooting whitetail (intertain me) at 10 yards?

Every gun is different. The best way is to load up some test loads using both powders & a variety of primers and put the shots ON PAPER. That will tell you what works best. After all, you want the most accurate load. I could tell you what works for my guns but it may not work as well in yours. I will tell you this: most BP pistol cartridges like CCI Large Magnum primers the best. Again, I said most and not all. Good luck.  ;)

I used to get both, loading my .45 Colts with Cowboy while loading my 45-70 with Cartridge. Now, I just get Cartridge and load it in both. I found that the .45 Colt didn't seem to care but my 45-70 liked the Cartridge better.

Also, I've tried both Magnum and regular primers and, again, found that the 45 Colt didn't seem to care while the 45-70 seemed to shoot a little better with the mugnum primers for light bullets (405 grain) while the regular primers worked better with heavy (500+ grain) bullets.
