TC,
I saw some skate board wheels on the net. I would like to see them in person, I am still using my Super Duty Rawhide Mallet that was give to me by Fourty Rod!

I will still be looking!

if you could get a hold of some of the old skate board or roller skate wheels i think those would work just nifty
ill have to keep my eyes open for that to

I used to skateboard in my younger days and there is a wide range of wheels out there.  You could probably go to the local walmart and buy a skateboard for less that 20 bucks...then that way you could inspect the wheels before you buy.
The cheap skateboards always have those hard plastic wheels.

cowboy316

TC
ya that to and i was thinking bout the old clear plastic drag wheels on the roller skets would work too

Here's a blog about how one guy made a maul from UHMW plastic.

Here's a place to get it online cheap.

Hope that helps.

Cowboy,

I've seen one made of PVC plumbing parts filled with lead shot also.  Don't know if that would hold up as well as yours looks like it will.

Here's mine....saved me $$ too.

She is real small but weighs in at 1 1/4 lbs. (21oz)  Solid Maple with lead core.

Not really for heavy punching but works real well for tooling.  I know that the rawhide string isn't the best way to go but it was all I had cased at the time I was making it. I supose when the string breaks I will sew a solid rawhide piece around her.

Cowboy, you could check at your local DYI store for table legs. They come already shaped and I have seen some that would make good handles.

Pokey Packrat

Howdy the Camp, I'm Pokey Packrat and I'm new around these Parts, just became a member, but I've been perousing this site for near a year, sure have picked up lots of good info and I decided to join the fun if that's OK?  Marshall Will with your indulgence,  I give you some background, been shooting Cowboy action for about 4yrs. and piddlin in leather work off and on since about 1970. I just finished this maul yesterday and figured I'd send on the info, hope it stimulates the juices, It's made with 3/8 thread rod, washers, castle nuts, scrap leather washers, glued and stacked and compressed on the thread rod, the Poly head was some scrap I had laying around and i hollowed it with a 1 1/4" forstener bit not quite through, drilled it 3/8 final and added #9 lead shot. It weighs 22 oz. is head heavy and the leather handle was turned on the lathe and finished with Polycrylic. The handle after glue and stack up could be easily shaped in a drill Press  or use a rasp and sandpaper to shape. We all probably have lots of leather scrap laying around! Hope this helps,

Welcome! Nice maul. So glad everyone's come up with less expensive ideas to make all this leather crafting work for us hobbyists. I mean, we have folks making their own tools right and left! It's awesome.

You're gonna like it here, Pokey.

Pokey, Welcome to our family! :)
The finest people in the world, are on this board, and I am glad to have you here!
Nice looking mallet!! Okay here in po dunk ville there isn't any of the poly rod around! the website posted earlier does have the right stuff, but you have to buy a foot of it, and then pay shipping, and you end up with $30.00 and it isn't done yet! I wanted to tell you pards I have some people in other towns, that are bigger than my town looking for the stuff! If I can find it, and it is priced like that is listed, i will see who all needs some and how much, and i can buy and ship tto you all!
Something that would help me Big Time, is to find out what the magor use of this product??
If anyone can tell me this maybe  that would narrow down the search!

Welcome Pokey,

Nice maul,  I would have never thought of the leather scraps to make the Handle like that.  Although when younger had a hunting knife with a handle made that way.

Thanks for the pic also looks great well done.

Howdy, Pokey. Welcome to the forum. That's a great idea to use the stacked leather for a handle. It looks great and, no doubt, feels the same. Nice job on that. Looking forward to seeing more of you around here.
