Don't have a press for it, got everything else covered. Long thin nail, thin punch?

What are y'all using or how?

Thanks for any info. These are 16 ga., if it matters.

I counterbored a shallow hole the diameter of the shell base into a piece of 1x4. Then I drilled a thru-hole in the center of the counter bore. I place this 1x4 up on blocks so the primers fall thru onto my work bench. To make a punch, I took a wooden dowel rod and turned it down to fit snuggly into the case. Thru this I drilled a hole so a small jewlers screw driver would fit snug. Place the case in counterbored hole in the 1x4, drop the dowel rod with screw driver into it and tap with a hammer.
Hope this helps!

What he said except I used an unused decapping pin from a Lee die for the punch.

What they said; except, I used a regular small diameter punch from my tool box.  Worked just fine.

Now I use the RCBS 12 ga die set on a single stage press.

Sometimes I use a jeweler's screwdriver, sometimes I use a long nail with the point filled to where it's not sharp enough to put a hole through the spent primer, sometimes I use the decapping tool from Rocky Mountain Cartridge. It all depends on what I find first.

It ain't like rocket surgery.

You could use a /1/2 or 3/4 inch drive socket if you don't have a hunk of steel to bore out. Let the old primer fall thru the squared hole for rachet

I also made a wooden block with a hole in it.  But I set my across an old .50 cal ammo can on a stool in front of my recliner. Then I bought a use .45-70 Lee Hand Loader and use the deprimer rod out of it for the 12ga.  I also use this method but with the base thats intended for depriming the .45-70 to deprime all my other ammo most is .45 Colt.  Just pop in a good western and deprime and enjoy a movie.

If wanted I can take pictures of my set up if it makes the explanation clearer.

I use an antique shot shell deprimer. You can find them all over the place at gun shows.

MEC makes a fine brass shell loading kit for the MEC 600 Jr. Mk-V loaders.  The depriming punch and primer seating cup are part of the kit.  MEC made me one for my 20ga and I love it.  I load my all brass Magtech 20ga shot shells on my MEC press just like I load my plastic ones, except I don't crimp on the press, I glue the overshot card in place.

I do mine with the antique depriming tool. The wooden one with the pin in the handle, and the little wooden base.

'Monterrey' Jack Brass

Using with an original/period deprimer is a great way to go, is effective and efficient. As for what to look for check out the photo below. Both items pictured are referenced in the Homer Fisher (1880) and Edward K. Tryon, Jr & Co (1883) catalogs to name a couple:

On the left is a mechanical primer/deprimer and it works like a gem, couldn't ask for anything better and it's worth looking for one (is shown below with brass shot shell ready for priming). On the right is a wooden deprimer/loading tool. The whole assembly is designed for two missions: 1) for depriming when the depriming pin is exposed for use, and; 2) as a loading tool to set over-powder wads and over-shot cards. The wooden end-cap is removable and can be put alternatively over the depriming pin for reloading, and over the other side with pin exposed for depriming. The third wooden piece, on the bottom of the photo, is the base unit that houses the shot shell when you're working on it in one of the above mentioned applications.

Good luck in your search if you decide to go with a period primer/deprimer tool.

I use a (very strong and cheap) replacement decapping pin for a LEE die, with a "collar" consisting of a piece of 3/4" dowel about 3" long (a little shorter than the decapping pin) with a hole down the middle to accept the pin.  Wind rubber bands around the pin where it comes out of the dowel, and shazaam, ya got a decapper that is easily centered in the flash hole.  A 1/2" hole through a piece of 2X4 for a base to set the shell on, and a small hammer to tap the pin with, and yer in business.  Not brain science or rocket surgery.

Don't know why I didn't mention this sooner, but MEC makes a kit for loading all brass Magtech shot shells.  It works great on my MEC 600 Jr. Mk-V 20ga press.  MEC made me that one.  Their stock kit is for the 12 ga shells and loaders.  With it you can size, deprime, prime and load the all brass shells.  Then, go ahead and glue in the overshot card as you are already doing.

Geezerhood is hard on recalling stuff like that, but sometimes the memory kicks in and there it is.  Found my glasses that way one afternoon.
