The Cylinder Pin.

I had been wanting to do this mod since I got this little jewel but finally gotten my self around to getting a few new pins for it & bringing my self to do it.

The job was simple really.
Taken my new pin, marked in 2 locations where I wanted it to hinge at & used my dremel with a medium cutting disk "to make the smallest cut" & cut the pin at a 45* angle.
Then I marked the cut ends for a center cut to accept my home made link & used the heavy duty cut disk for this "since my link was just a bit thicker than the disk.
Using a 1/4" X 2" body washer as my material for my link I cut & drilled it to match what I wanted, then drilled the pin to accept a 5/64" roll pin.
Assembled the pin, some minor filing to get the roll pins the same profile as the rest of the pin & then used a single coat of Oxpho-Blue to protect my work.

Here is my result after about 1 hour of work.

Now the modifications that I've done to her to make her the Conical Launching Machine she is:

Smoothed & tuned the action.
Reamed all 18 Chambers to .451 from .446 to better fill the .4495 groved bore.
Recrowned the barrel.
Opened up the nipple area of the cylinders for use of a Snail Capper.
Widened up the right side of the loading window to accept the .456 220gr. Lee Conicals.

New pictures.

What do y-all think?

Nice mod to that cylinder pin. I like the way you did it. Just enough to slip past the lever lug. Thanks for the pics.

Thanks for the idea and the pictures!  My first gunsmithing project years ago (and nearly my last) was shortening the barrel on a brass framed ASM 58.  Considering how well it shot, I should have left it alone.  I got everything put back together and it all worked like a charm except for one small issue.  You guessed it.  The pin was too long to fully exit the gun.  Great way to NOT lose a cylinder pin, but it makes for long and deeply concerning cleaning sessions.  Copious amounts of fluids, a hair dryer and pumping the cylinder pin in and out with a good coat of bore butter.  Blessedly, the thing manages to clear the cylinder with lots of room to spare.  Now I know how to fix it.  Thanks!

Glad the pics help & hope to see yours here too.  :)

Hey Raider, I remember you posting the info on how you enlarged the nipple area but I can't seem to find the thread.  Could you shoot out the post ;D once more?  I'd like to do it myself, and since your the mod trail breaker, I'd like to follow your path.

Actually that was not my idea so I can't take credit for it but I had done all of my Pietta NMA cylinders usin the technique that Sundance 44s on The Firing Line described how it's done.

Hi,

Just wondering what to point of this mod is.  Is it easier to pull the pin out?

Thanks

Because the barrel is shorter than 6" which brings the barrel lug closer to the frame, the cylinder pin can not be completely removed for normal cleaning &/or possible replacement because there isn't sufficient space for the pin the clear the frame.

This mod now allows the pin to be fully removed for that purpose.

Thanks, Didn't think of that...Nice work.

Is that hinge location as strong as one inside the cylinder?

Saw this one on SCORRS:

Smoke em if ya got em.

Raider2000

WOW that thar sure is purdy.

I guess it's just as strong, mine was just enough to clear the lug where that one may have an extra 1/2" to clear.

Howdy,

That shiny little beauty is mine, I did the mods a few years ago, I think I was the first to do the hinge pin arrangement, at least I had never seen it before. The little pistol is still performing without problems. It is in the white, just highly polished.
