A simple steel box won't meet the requirements of the ATFE for a powder magazine.
These are just short of being a safe, and do meet all the requirements of an indoor powder storage magazine.
You can always go look up the requirements of an indoor powder magazine on the ATFE's web page and build one yourself.

I've seen the codes before, they have to have a certain strength and restance to fire, but they also have to be able to vent gases in case that ain't enough and you do have a powder fire.

If it won't safely vent the gasses it becomes a large bomb, not what you want.  BTW powder cans will also open and vent rather than becoming a bomb. ;)

I know now where I've seen the specs for powder magazines, they are in the SAAMI stuff that most loading manuals and pamplets have included.  Have read through that several times.

I guess I could scan that information and post it since few ever read loading manuals any more. ::)

The metal has to be of a certain guage, with a specified overlap of seams and the top over the body.

Has to be lined with a non sparking material.

Has to have two locks on the cover, I believe they are mortise locks or two padlocks with 3/8 shackles and 5 tumblers with a 1/4 hood to prevent sawing.

Hinges have to be tamper proof.

All I can think of now. Thats nothing compard to specs for outdoor powder mag!!

How strange is that!!

Here in the UK we USED ta keep BP in Steel magazines.... Power came in Tin/alloy containers, But Now all that's changed and the good ol H & S E have decided that Wood `n` Plastic is the only way ta go!!

Soooooooooooo

Now all BP shooters have ta change ALL their BP Boxes (Magazines) to a wooden construction and the individual cans must be plastic

Its just another way ta Pi** UK shooters off!!

Quote from: Seth Hawkins on February 04, 2009, 03:54:46 PM...I'm planning to buy a couple cases of powder, and don't want to run afoul of the ATF.  This looks like a plain metal box to me...

How are you legally able to buy a "couple" cases? The law states that you (non-licensed person) can be shipped 25 lbs., however I would check with your state & local codes to see how much you can possess. Many places say no more than 5 lbs. on hand and in my state it's a Class B felony to have more than 5 lbs. How do I know? I know the Fed. DOT guy for my state as he shoots BP too!  ;)

The specs I found were for Nitro powder, don't know if they are the same.  Bet one of the black powder dealers would know them though. ;)

Your local/city/county/state laws may be different but for Fed regs you are allowed to buy up to 50 lbs a year for sporting use.

Seth, give this a look for a powder magazine ... http://cgi.ebay.com/WATER-TIGHT-AMMO-CONTAINER-STORAGE-SHIPPING-CASE-DURABL_W0QQitemZ130270014181QQihZ003QQcategoryZ71133QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262
I have 4 deep square Navy ammo containers that I use.  Three in the outdoor shed and one in the reloading room.  Just set the lid on the container - don't lock them

Hmmm, I am using an old government surplus fireproof file cabinet for my powder storage. Thing is HEAVY to beat all get out.
When you say you are only allowed to buy 50 lbs, is that buy or is that possess? Just curious, as I was almost ready to order another case, and that would put me into the 75lb range.

I use 20mm ammo boxes.  Good nuff for armed forces, good nuff for me.  50 Cal boxes would be the same, but hold less.

It's been a while since I last checked the regs but as I recall, you can buy up too 100lbs a year without having a federal explosive license.  (don't quote me on that, as I noted...it's been a while) One needs to be very carefull though. I can purchase 100lbs a year, no problem. But my state laws forbid possession of more than 5 lbs at a time. I usually purchase 25 lbs at a time and get past that "possession" law because there are  people in my residence who all use BP.

Good grief.  Reading this thread makes me think, why doesn't anyone these days have the cajones to tell the local governments that "This is AMERICA, you have no right to tell me what I can or cannot do on my own property, so go F yourself". Isn't that one of the reasons we have the 2nd Amendment in the first place????????
