Lets do some looking at outfits

Lone Gunman

Evolution of a Gunman

This was taken in the doorway of the bunkhouse at Rock Creek Station in 2005.

The character to the left is a little younger and should probably be called the Lone Greenhorn instead.

More great pics.

Scarlett, That looks so right. You could have had that taken a good hundred years ago.

Del, what a great picture. I love it. The kids's outfits are outstanding.

Lone Gunman, I really like that one. Your half-flap holster sure solidifies the look.

Ottawa Creek Bill -

Gads, Sir- The detail you have put into your outfits is most impressive. I felt that your profile photo looked familiar, now we find that you worked LOTM, as well as other films.

If I might prevail upon your historical expertise, I would like to ask about "ribbon shirts".

A family friend, Grandma Neva Standing Bear (Rosebud Lakota) taught my wife to make Ribbon Shirts so that I would look goooood when we accompanied the Standing Bears to powows and ceremony. Can you tell me at what time period they first appeared, and when historically  a Ribbon Shirt would be appropriate wear (ie: special events, powow, etc)?

>I wish more folks would try to look like they've worn their clothes for a good length of time, especially the male gender.

That's a very valid point, perhaps it's an emotional issue. I don't get much opportunity to wear my outfits, and I find it's difficult to take clothing you just spent days or weeks constructing and go roll around in the dirt :-)

Professor Marvel....

Appreciate the comments...............
Ribbon shirts are a 20th century Pow-Wow dance item, as are straight dance shirts.

I know what you mean about getting your clothes dirty...but you gotta do what you gotta do to make them look correct.

If you've ever watched the movie Tombstone, and have watched the extras with the directors commentary, one thing that struck me is that of all the things he would have done different in that film, is, he would have gotten the fella riding shotgun on the stagecoach clothes dirtier....his comment was he looked too clean compared to the rest of the actors. Trivial, but something he thought took away from the quality of the overall film.

Well sir, You have opened my eyes - I finally took steps in that direction today - I wore a new white mexican shirt  and new white canvas button fly trousers to a shoot and make a conscious effort to wipe my hands on both whilst loading and cleaning my C&B revolvers.  It was at first an effort to break "gentlemanly habits", but it certainly is taking the "new shine" off. I shall continue this experiment in properly aging this outfit by wearing it whilst doing outside chores.  A little breakfast grease, a little more dirt, some lunch gravy, more BP fouling and they should be on the right path :-)
Could perhaps frequent washing without detergent will help accelerate aging?

OCB,

That last pic -- M1 or M2?  Given the year, I probably know why you're holding it.

Ottawa Creek Bill

Professor.....
If you want to put a little Age on that new clothing without rolling around in the dirt.....add about a table spoon of walnut dye (made from walnuts) to a couple gallons of water over night...then rinse in cold water.

This will knock off the new look and give it an aged look. Before you do this experiment with a material close to what you are wearing.

You want to pre wet your shirt, let it dry so it is damp and then dye it.

Daniel......That is a M2 that I took off a dead Viet Cong.

Looks good Dave,  BTW I would not roll those outfits in the dirt. ;)

A good example of more of a business look.

Tangent, but this reminds me of when I rode motorcycles.  Guys would buy a new jacket and ask me how I got mine to look the way it did.  The only true answer was "I wore it".  Nobody could have falsley made it look the way it does.  Mighta come close, but folks could just tell that it had seen some real miles.

I have a white blouse I've used while mounted shooting (i.e. being around the horse) ..stains from all kindsa things...If ya'll are patient next time we have a shoot that's warm enough to wear it I'll let someone snap a picture......will it be ok if I am holding a modern day bottled beverage?  ;D Usually I avoid film when I look trail worn  :D

Think you were wearin it in perty good right here.  Had a better dust shot, but it was out of frame cause the camera was too slow.

Dr. Bob

Scarlet.

I think that we can manage a pic with a brewski bottle in it.  A ice cold glass mug would be PC too, but don't put yourself for us! ;D

I used to think I was the one that corrupted folks by handing them something and saying "try this" Oh so wrong...I don't hold a candle to some of my cowboy/cowgirl pards.  ;D

I came across this picture.

I think I have some pretty good stuff here. The racoon bag (holds all kinds of goodies) I got at EOT one yr Tanned hide, leather lining. The skirt that used to be a brides maids dress...Mom tore it apart and we made something useful out of it...It has leather stains, horse stains and some tears in the hem it's hard to tell but it's faded too. The knife was made by LongLine Charlie. I love his work! That guy next to me I think he fills the bill of PC...he had shot all day too so I'm pretty sure his clothes were well used that day  ;) That's Tensleep for those of you that may be wondering.
