So we have discussed the Heel Base bullet in a number of threads here recently.
I figured I'd try the picture thing again. After looking in the training barn, then the house, then scratching my head, I finally called the wife on her cell phone (always safer than face to face conversation) and she told me it was in her purse, in her car :-\ Then I had to carefully detach the ear phones, a hair brush and one of those hair clip things from the strap, in the dark (thank god I carry a tactical flash light in my back pocket). So I got lucky and the dang camera had a charge and the flash card was in it............. Woo Hoo :o

This is a pic showing three different, currently available bullets that I use. The one in the center is Old West (Bernie Rowles) 248gr "Remington" bullet. It is avalable in multiple cavity (I use two cavity) and casts VERY WELL. I find it to be very accurate and with the two lube grooves it carries enough lube for BP and smokeless. The bullet on the left is the exact same mould that has been modified for my Henry "Flat". It weighs 225gr +or- and eliminates the concerns of "chain fires" in the Henry magazine. The bullet on the right is Rapine 415210 and approximates the Colt type 44 round very well. It has a pointed ogive and one lube groove.

Hope this helps!

Howdy HH,

Thanks for posting those heel bullet comparison photo.  ;D

Just a few questions,...what brass are you using with each of those,...and could the one on the right be a Rapine #451210 bullet rather than the NEI 415210 which you say it is?

I don't think NEI makes a 415210 mould.......

As my 14 year old says, "my bad" ???
I had been discussing NEI moulds with w44wcf o this string:
http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,24132.0.html
and I had a brain fart (gotta remember the gingko).

The picture shows 44 Colt cases, but 44 Russian works fine also. I can get 28 grains of fffg in the colt case and that is spot on in the Henry to duplicate the original load!

LOL,.....yep,..I do the same thing.  ;D

The reason I asked about the brass is that the middle cartridge in your photo looks shorter than the ones on the outsides, and it also looks to have a larger rim, so I thought it might be a 44 Russian case.

I'm psyched to have you ream that '75 Rem. cyl. for me so I can start shooting the .44Colt/Russian in my '75 Rem.  ;)

Thanks again!

Ok Oldelm..........

We are going with a .431 throat, right ???
(cause this thread is about heeled .451 bullets)

You know that photo is missleading, must be the curve in the lens ::)

HH,...yes, I definitely won't be shooting any .451 heeled in my .44 chambered '75 Rem.

....yes, indeed,.....on that .357 cyl you're reaming to .44spl.
Sorry to have interjected my thoughts about that in this .451 heeled thread,
.... as I can see how it could create confusion.

Hoof Hearted . . . very interesting.  How was the mold  "modified" to produce the flat point bullet on the left of the picture ? . . you did it ? . . or special ordered ?  I might be interested in the same thing but to mold with a hollow base.
Beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.

Wolfie

Tell me EXACTLY what you are tryig to do (hollow base mould for what caliber/gun combination?).
I have done all of this and have bunches of moulds, I can save you time, money and frustration :P

What Bernie does to "modify" the Remington Mould to this "Henry Flat" configuration is he does actually machine through the nose portion then he installs a corresponding "plug" that is set screwed in place, creating a shorter nose. This shortening of the ogive makes a wider meplat!

Pettifogg

What is the diameter of the heel section of the Rapine 451210 bullet, at say, BHN 7-10?
