A question has come up...

Can someone compair the Balistics of a a 380 Auto Cal. Ball ammo from a 3" barrel  VS
22 Mag. ammo also from  a 3" barrel...

The questions is of the two which is the more Potent round..

Not even close.  The .380 will push a 90 grain bullet in the 850 fps range.

The .22 mag is less than half the bullet weight.  The .22 mag, with a 40 grain bullet will be right around 1200 fps out of a 3" pipe.

a simple mass X velocity / 1000 will give us 76.5 for the .380, and 48.0 for the .22 mag.

Note the .22 mag gets "respectable" out of a 6"+ revolver or rifle, wheras the .380, owing to design efficiency, doesn't gain a whole lot with barrel length.  But in yer typical pocket rocket, .380 every time.

Exactly what I wanted thanks ......

in mass X velocity / 1000 will give us 76.5 for the .380, and 48.0 for the .22 mag.

What scale is the 76.5 v 48.0 measuered in ... PSI or ?

OK, dumb question but based on a fictional book,
'IF' the .22 will do what it is supposed to do, will the the .22 CB also do the same as in the book 'Unintended Consequenses'?
Just curious, having never run any tests of my own, but most of you probably have read the book and I'm interested to read if it is possible in your humble or expert opinion, even thought it is technically a  book based on historical 'fiction', m/l.
Best regards and good shooting!

P.S. I loved the book!

Major, ballistics is an interesting science, the 380 will have mor foot pound but assuming a solid bullet the 22 mag will penatrate a heck of a lot further if that is a concern. ;)

Expanding bullets in both it will depend on the design.

One must always remember there is more to terminal ballistics than ft/lbs energy.  Ft/lbs is worthless unless you can cause that bullet to do the damage desired.

Good example my BP 45-70 with a 500 gr bullet and my brother's 220 Swift with a 55 have right at the same ft/lbs energy.  Which would you want to face a mean grizzley with? :)

it's not PSI, but a rough estimate of momentum, as expressed in power factor.  As far as terminal damage to a zombie, a bigger hole is always preferred, so long as it gets to the boiler room.  I carry a 3.5" .380 as a CCW at times.  I'd consider a .22 manglem in a short gun as a deep cover backup (a little better thana  pointy stick), not a primary CCW

Bingo AJ....that is what I needed...

380 VS 22 Mag. as CWC for deep carry

I'm toying with the idea of a North American Arms "EARL" ( looks like a Remington Pocket Model )

If you are looking for a small but powerful CCW, I believe an American manufacturer produced a Derringer style pistol in .45/70 top barrel and .45colt lower barrel.
Presumably they didn't think anyone was crazy enough to pull the trigger on a second barrel in .45/70!!
Can you imagine the muzzle flash in a dark alleyway!

 :o  45/70 !  holy felt recoil ...BATMAN ! :)

I've seen 410 slash 45 Colt Derringer style.... No not really looking for a Derringer

I have a small Auto loader for CWC.... I just like the "Earl'

I was thinking a 22 mag hollow point or shocker might serve as deep cover backup
