Hi y'all i'm new to this site and wanted to say hey to everyone.  Like everyone else when it comes to saa I can't figure out what I want but I have narrowed it down to the cimarron model p or a EMF New dakota i am looking for authenticity and reliability.  I found a EMF new dakota made by Uberti at a gun shop previously owned but unfired for $499. Is this a good deal? It seems very well put together. But my question about it is that the salesman told me it has real color case hardening on it, is this true? ??? Also how does the cimarron model p compare. I have read that the cimarron is the closest you can get to the original colt. I also kinda like the emf pietta great western californian model. Is it a good gun? Thanks for the input

Curley Cole

Here is an old model Dakota (made by Jager) And a picture of a few Great Western 2's...the CCH on the Ubertis are not very good and the color will infact wear off. I have a Taylor and the frame is now just a couple of shades of gray...It is a good shooter.

As to the GW2, many folks in the know (gunsmiths etc) say the GW2 is the closest thing to a Colt you can get. If you spend a couple of extra dollars, your CCH on a GW will be done by Turnbull.

As you can see I like the GW. I have about all the styles except the Stainless. The custom nickel pair have real Ivory grips from Boone trading. (I like them well enough to put a pair of $400 grips on them...although I got a good deal on them..)

I can easily say you will not be unhappy with an EMF product. (they also have the best Customer service around.)

IMHO

I couldn't agree more with what Curley just said, I've shot most the single actions out there with the exception of some, but the E.M.F. Great Western ll , is without a doubt the closest single action out there that is as close to a second generation Colt SAA, these Six Shooters are beautiful, I have a pair of Stainless Steel, 7/1/2" barreled 45 long colts, when I got got these beauties home I checked them out with a range rod to see if they were tuned right, and they were spot on perfect, these E.M.F. Great Western ll handle just like the second generation Colts I used to have, and I haven't felt that in many guns of today. ( IMHO ) Fortunately for us cowboy crowd, there are several makers of fine firearms out there for us.

Are the californian models as good as the customs functionally I know the finish isn't be as good

The internals of the Californian vs the Customs are identical on the GW II - you should observe no difference.  I have a nickel GW II in .357 and I love it.  I think the Uberti's are a good product, but I find them oversprung and a touch rough.  THE GW II's are better this way.

I think $499 for a standard Uberti six shooter imported by EMF or Cimarron is a touch high, but its not outrageous.  It probably is right around MSRP.  For $499 you should be getting a steel grip frame and a case hardened or faux case hardened finish.  Not a matte finish, and not a brass grip frame, which are the unauthentic touches found on Colt clones (among others).

The GW II Customs have a genuine color case hardened finish by Doug Turnbull.  The Californians have a case hardened finish which is no doubt better than the Uberti's, but I don't know if it's 'genuine' or not.  It looks pretty well done.  I am thinking of buying one of these Californians myself, and would be very interested to hear what these finishes consist of and how they hold up.

The Great Western ll Californian has the same great insides as the premium model, and a nice meat and potatoes outside, these guns are hard to beat, if your looking for a Colt SAA 1873 clone, there about as close as you will get to the real deal. ( IMHO )

Blackpowder Burn

If you want as close as possible to the real Colts - look as US Firearms.  They are 100% built in the US - every single part is manufactured here.  They are built from original Colt blueprints and are identical to 2nd generation Colts.  For $600 you can get new Rodeo models with great action jobs from Long Hunter Shooting Supply.  For $875 you can get the Premium models with Doug Turnbull CCH.

The Italian guns are of good quality, but the USFA's are clearly better - and they have a lifetime warranty.  I've shot both and am now using USFA's.
