Howdy;

OK, my buddy finally took possession of his new Cimarron '76 in .45-60 the day before Christmas Eve. He managed to slip it into the safe before his sweet little wifemate got home from work, not that she'd know the difference in a '73 and a '76, but if she were to see 3 that looked a LOT alike, questions might arise.  :-X

My question is about barrel finish in the Ubertis. Should I have him go through the jacketed bullet break in procedure, shoot 1, clean, shoot 1, clean...etc or is the factory finish good enough to just start with 20-1 boolits and Goex? Maybe just a few "gravel 'n' grease" boolits loaded over some Trail Boss would do just as well.

After break in this rifle will only see Goex and grease cookies under Lyman's 457191 with Glen Larson's BPCR Supreme.

TIA for any insights.

IMHO, I see no need to taint the bore with copper clad bullets.  These rifles were desiged for cast bullets and black powder.

I shot my new Cimarron 1876 in 45-75 for the first time two days ago with Ten-X smokeless lead bullets.  I was shooting less than two inch groups at 50 yards, even with an excessively heavy trigger (10 pounds or more).  I could not imagine copper jacket working much or any better than that.  I am very impressed with the rifle shooting the lead projectiles.

Wouldnt hurt to give the bore a couple good scrubbins with JB Bore compound after shooting 25 rounds or so through it. I never even thought about breaking these old cartridge barrels in- I worry a barrel to death if its a prarie dog gun, but I just dont think fouling would be much of an issue with these.

Dirty Brass

I started my 45/60 off on smokeless loads (20 of them) and have been digesting mostly Pyrodex RS and Triple 7 ever since. (probably 120 - 140 rounds) Rifle has shot cleanly and accurately with lead bullets all along. Plan on doing the same thing with the 45/75 now.

Didn't know 'ya had to "break 'em in"   :o

I would not.  I used jacketed bullets because I had some cheap to fireform some .45-75 brass while awaiting molds but have stopped that!   ;)

I didn't really want to have to keep cleaning copper out anyway. ;D

In the middle of loading the first 50 into cut down Winchester .45-70 cases.  60 gr of Goex Cartridge, .060 fiber wad,
.100 wafer of my old 2/1 beeswax/Bore Butter lube, and Lyman 457191.

457191 has 3 round bottom grooves and can't possibly hold enough lube for that 28" barrel. Hopefully the grease
wafer will be enough.

Maybe tomorrow will be calm, and dry enough that we can drive onto the range...providing that my buddy's off work.

Thanks for the replies.
