Paste dye

Hy pards,
I need some suggestion from you that are more expert than me...I tried to use a "paste dye" mahogany (bought from tandy leather) without success, is it possible to thin it with something and use it  like any other "liquid" dye?

I know just what you're talking about. Mine came out more purple than anything else, and it looks like it's got a coat of plastic on it. I used it on a practice piece, but won't use it again. Mine was Tandy's Eco-Flo Gel Antique. The tan looks yellow orange, or maybe mustard to me. You can see a picture of what I'm talking about on the "show your stuff thread, right at the end.

2 things you can do with the paste antique stain.
1st, try stirring it up real good then test it.
2nd, it can be thinned with tan kote. works real well.

Thanks for that thinning advice WC, I will have to give that a try. I sure did like the ease of application, just not the final result. Course, if I wanted easy, I'd have someone else do this for me! Where would the fun be in that?

Did not know about thining gel antique with tan kote. thats good to know thanks.

as far as antique goes i like the antique saddle tan for a all over color. the project has a redish tint to it.

Jd you might try sealing a practice piece of toolled leather first then put the antique on and wipe off asap. be sure the antique gets into the impressions real good before wipping off. antique dye is designed to do this not color the whole project.
even though i have colored the whole project with antique dye because i like some of the colors acheived with antiques.

I use the antique gel after I dye, and buff, but before anything else. It seems to work ok. Definately makes a difference in final color tho. DM
